Primer fellout while seating bullet?

OP also states that the brass was converted to 20 Vartag, was it fireformed in the process? If so, hot load?

Was not fire formed during the process. However, they came to me new being fire formed. Not fire formed, but annealed.

I'm a benchrest shooter 308 caliber , I never reloaded a case with a crimp in the primer pockets . If you removed the crimp does that mean you would go from a small RP to a large . Is the flash hole a different size ? I uniform my pockets on all my brass and make the flash holes the same size . I haven't had problems with loose pockets , I use benchrest CCI and Federal primers and so far in 30+ years no problems . Could the crimp be the problem an not the primers?

At the time Lake City makes live rounds for sale, they place a crimp around the primer pocket. After punching out the fired primer, you have to use a swag die to remove the crimp so a new primer can be added.

Try CCI 450 or BR-4. On a side note. I have been told that the LC brass sold on the civilian market is Government rejects. Don't remember where I heard it. I am sure it is safe to use, but didn't meet Mil Spec requirements.

This is what I just tried. I opened the second new bag of brass in 223. I have done no forming to this group of brass.

Picked 5 random cases and put Remington 7 1/2 primers. Very loose fit. One actually fell out when I turned it over.

I then pulled 5 loaded rounds and removed the primers.

Using the same 10 cases, I then used some CCI 400 primers. These primers fit like a glove. I could really feel the difference when seating them. It felt like it should feel.

I check the primer diameter with my micro and found this:
Remington 7 1/2 = .17375
CCI 400 = . 17490

Difference of: .00115

I'll use the CCI on these now.

I find Federal primers to fit the loosest, CCI mid fit and Sellier & Belliot a very tight fit (just a tad tighter than Wolf). You could find some S&B primers to use instead of trashing the brass if the seller will not take it back.

Thanks for the information. The CCI's fit perfect.

Just to clear up my thought process. Was this new virgin 223 brass or once fired reprocessed 223 brass when you got it?

Okay, I'm lost. You didn't fireform the brass during the process of converting it to 20 Vartag but they came to you new being fireformed? At what point and by who was this brass fireformed and by whom?

Not sure who fire formed it. Factory maybe. I used the wrong term earlier. It was annealed, not fire formed.

So now you know what was going on. Looking at the SAAMI specifications posted earlier:

Like many I hand prime and normally don't give primer seating a second thought unless things simply do not "feel" right. When primers just seem to fall right in with little to no force applied either the primer outside diameter is too small or the primer pocket inside diameter is too large. Apparently your Remington 7 1/2 primers were too small on the OD. I would drag out my pin gauge set and the micrometer and start looking at the dimensions.

A few years ago and I forget which forum, this subject came up and someone suggested Ballistic Tools Case Gauges so for about ten bucks each I ordered the Small and Large Primer Pocket Swage Gage ® Set which was a smart move for the buck. Makes for quick and simple and easier than dragging out the pin gauges. I saw where someone mentioned similar so be they Ballistic Tool or another they are a simple investment making for a quick check of a primer pocket as to Go/NoGo. When I bought the two gauge set my only regret was not getting the three gauge set which included the .224 and .308 neck tension gauge. Anyway, something you may wish to consider for the future.

Ballistic Tools makes a go/no go primer pocket gauge that will save you a lot of time and grief. i use it on all my 223 brass to avoid that problem

I purchased some new 223 LC annealed brass about a month ago. I formed it to 20 Vartarg without any issues. Since the brass was new, I didn't have to remove the crimp from the primer pocket. .

Something is fishy here.
At what point AND by WHO was this brass fire formed?
WHY was it fire formed?
Are you SURE it was fire formed?
This is going in circles!

Pat's right,,who gets NEW FIRE FORMED BRASS,,answer,,NOBODY.This thread is a bad joke,

That being said I wonder why the military would sell brand new cases if they met quality control standards.

The military doesn't sell LC brass, ATK (under what ever name they currently use since they were purchased last yr) does.
