Price of a Chamber job from your gunsmith

Thud

I just picked up 2 barrels from my local smith and was charged over what I have paid in the past. I paid over $350.00 for each chamber and threading and a gloss finish on each barrel. Previous cost was $250.00 each last had done no more then 2 months ago. I was told nothing about a price increase before or after till I picked them up.
Whats your collective opinion...

Sounds alittle high. Just goes to show always ask price first. The $250.00 sounds plenty.

For 350 those chambers better be perfect 100% the first time with no going back for issues. Local CNC shop does it for lot less and only count it as drilling a high tolerance hole in bar stock on the receipt.

Col Billy Stevens still has a chamber job on his site listed at $175. He has done several for me and all have been perfect. He has built national championship winning rifles. Some times a little slow if they are shooting a big match some where, but i can understand that. Ebb

I talked with 2 local smith's this weekend about doing a 6.5 300WSM for me and their price for thread, chamber, headspace and crown was $200.

Thud,
Has this been your smith for some time? does he drink excessively? that doesn't make rational sense charging a good customer $100 over his already premium price. Unless he does un-replaceable precision quality match winning work I think I would look else where and I would give him a call and say I was looking at the new and old bills and noticed the big change in price ,....WHY?
Wayne.

Thud: Did you get the "high gloss" finish on you last chamber job? My smith does charge $100 if you want the bling mirror finish. Even then the price would be around $285

I charge $200 to chamber and crown a barrel but I know some guys that charge $350 and more. The job is no different. Mine is no better or worse but my friend has won some major shooting titles and I haven't so people will pay him more because they think he's better. Brian Brown.

For Remington or Savage type actions:

I would charge $225.00 to dial in on both ends +/_.00005", turn, thread, camber, headspace, chamfer, and polish inside chamber, cut (in a bandsaw) dial in again, turn and crown (11 degree or counter bored w/ outer chamfer), clean, lubricate, install, test fire (usually 3-5 shots) and engrave caliber/cartridge, neck dia if not SAAMI, and my name. If I provide the reamer and gauges there is a $55.00 reamer and gauges fee. There is a $10.00 fee for shop supplies. No extra charge for 320 grit finnish. There is a $55.00 fee for polish and/or glass bead finish.
Barrels requiring a cone bolt fit, or extractor slot are more of course. I beleive this is within the ball park of what others are charging for the same or simular services. You are looking at a minimum of 3-6 hours to complete the aforementions services.

I'm not going to mention names but i have had some barrels chamberd by one or two of the very best benchrst gunsmiths in the country..a few hall of famers..prices range from $175.00 to $250.00 with $250.00 being the very high end. my last two were $200.00(each) thread/chamber and crown..

Thud you said gloss finish? did you have them blue'd? if you did that would explain the cost.
