Pre Soak Brass to remove primer residue

I have an ultrasonic cleaner. It works very well cleaning the brass, and frankly the brass is really done after a single or double cycle of 480 seconds. The only reason I run it longer is to try to remove all of the residue from the primer pocket.

This stuff in the primer pocket is not just carbon. The carbon is stripped from the inside of the case in almost no time at all. The primer pocket stuff is sticky and a different animal.

I was thinking about soaking the cases in Dawn and water for a day or so and see it that softens the pimer crud, then cleaning. Any thoughts?

Add lemishine to the soak.

Other than that... it's time for a SS media tumbler. :D

Lemishine is acidic. I don't suggest soaking in Lemishine.

I'm guessing you meant '480 Seconds" (not minutes)

Anyway, what type of solution are you using in the U/S cleaner?

I've used the home brew of Lemishine and Dawn. I use Hornady now. Both work well.

have you tired distilled water and distilled white vinegar (50/50 mix, with a few drops of Dawn)?

That's what I'm using, and my primer pockets come out clean, just like the pics in this article - http://www.accurateshooter.com/technical-articles/ultrasonic-case-cleaning/

that article is where I got the 'solution recipe' from.

Bradley,
I use SS media in a rotary tumbler. A customer sent me some Lazzeroni cases that resisted cleaning the primer pockets like you describe.
I sat the cases head down in a tray filled with 1/8" of Bore Tech carbon remover for an hour PRIOR to running them through the SS and it did the trick.

One more step, sure, but it worked well.

99% of the time, the SS media plus a degreasing type of dishwashing soap with a tablespoon of Lemishine and the brass looks like new.

Occasionally, I'll presoak a load of brass overnight if I have a large load (125 .308 cases), but I don't add any Lemishine at that point. If you do, the brass will become tarnished by the citric acid. Been there, done that.

The next morning I'll replenish with hot water, Lemishine, detergent, and tumble for two hours (ss method).

I'm normally only cleaning 66 cases at a time, so I don't presoak as a rule.

I try to run around 80 .308 cases. But I don't pre soak since the load is going into the SS tumbler anyway.
