Practice .22's for for long range ??

Was reading in the tech dept on here and really didn't realize that .22 long range practice (200 yds.) was good for the center fire rifles !! Now does anyone else practice like this ?? What type of .22 are you using specifically ?? I would guess they would all be bolt rifle .22’s but how far up the food chain are you going as far as upper end or budget rifles ?? I want to try this in a serious manner. I have been on the RFC forum and have some really good feedback !! Just wanted to know what the center fire guys were using. I have been looking at everything from Anschutz, Remington, Sako, and Weatherby. Leaning towards a used 541 T if I can find one, the main reason is cost !! Some of those upper end .22’s are really salty !!
Well, again thanx for all input !!

Look at a CMP 22. I just picked up a H&R M12 just for this purpose ($400). As soon as the weather settles down a bit I'm hittin the range. Scope is mounted just need a day or two in the 20's ;) with light/no wind to get it settled in.

Yeah, that CMP Kimber 82 Gov't is a hard deal to beat at $600. If you don't want to use irons you could probably mount a scope on it and make it a baby F-Class rifle if you wanted.

I have a CZ 452 with a Boyd's thumbhole and a 6-18X Nikon as my baby F-class rifle. 22s at 200 yards is really fun and boy do you have to pay attention to the wind.

Depending on your cartridge (most use Wolf it seems) you're talking over 15 MOA elevation to get to 200 from 100-yard zero and a 10MPH wind can take you over 20 MOA deflection. That kind of drop is the equivelent of shooting my 6.5 at about 800 yards and 20MOA worth of wind is about what I get at 1400 yards with my 6.5.

So yes, practicing at 200 yards with a .22 is quite viable. At least I think so.

The problem with 200yd rimfire shooting is that, I don't think, no rimfire ammo can do the job, i.e. accurate enough to clean the NRA 200 rimfire target (I think the 10-ring is 2moa).

You'd be surprised what the match stuff will do. The Wolf match has been the best I've seen. The Eley stuff isn't bad either but the Wolf's cheaper and general consensus is that it's the best out there right now. I tried Velocitors at that range to try and take advantage of its weight and velocity but it's still below the speed of sound before 100 yards and didn't seem to be as accurate.

I bought a .22lr specifically for F-class practice. I have a Savage MKII BV with the tacticool stock on it, this stock simulates the shape of my centerfire stock fairly well. The rifle is pretty accurate for the price. If I use Wolf match target and do my part correctly I can keep it under a MOA at 100. Wind effects the round quite a bit, and this gives me a lot of wind practice at short range. The best part is it is cheap on ammo too.

Wayne, I've tried 10x, RWS50 and some old Russian ammo not longer sold and they all failed at 200yd but this ammo does well at 100. I wonder is anyone has cleaned the NRA 200 yd target?

It makes me wonder as well. If it wasn't windy I'm sure it's doable. Most of the shooting I've done at 200 was informal.

Heavies,

I want that stock, it came out 2 weeks after I got my thumbhole from Boyds! I was annoyed to say the least. That's a Boyd's Tacticool right? Is it made of wood? I ask because if I get one I'd kind of like to put an adjustable cheek on it which would require some cutting . . . Thanks

Yes, it is a Boyd's Tacticool and it is wood. I got it for around $90 when they first came out. And I agree, an adjustable cheek would look terrific! ;D

I'm happy with my Savage BTVS, but prefer not to embarrass myself at 100+ yard ranges other than for gopher hunting. Best shot to date is a paced off 140 yarder. Wind is brutal on a .22LR. The interesting part though is that subsonic target ammo is about 50% less sensitive to wind than the high velocity stuff. See this article.

The Wind is not your Friend

If you can find one the Suhl 150 is a good target gun.

I am the match director at our Club ( www.bentongunclub.org ) for a 200 yard 22 Long Rifle RF match. We have shot this match for approximately 2 years now and have had one (1) possible and none with all X's. I would say the ammo is the problem in having guns/ammo capable of shooting possibles. Our match has been shot with everything up to and including Super Match Anscutz with Tennex ammo as well as Walther KK's, and other very expensive target guns and ammo that have proven repeatable accuracy out to 100 yards.

A 22 LR round does, however, move with the wind as a 308 does at 1000 yards so for wind reading it helps.

The feedback is just not there - i.e. If you hold in the X-ring, for correct feedback, the shot should go there. IT DOES NOT DO SO REGULARLY.

I'm glad this was a viable thread. Thank youv all for the good info. I will have to get back to you on how I fair shooting long range .22 when the weather breaks...way to cold for prone outdoor shootin for me.

Just came back from the range 1/2 hr ago. 18 F wind 0 -10 mph (just had to try the CMP H&R M 12). AVG for 10 5 shot groups (50 yds)was .34 useing Eley 1073fps BB. I'M HAPPY ;D ;D ;D. Can't wait for warmer temps.

I started a thread about this at BRCentral (rimfire fourm) about 3 weeks ago. I have a 90 foot basement in my buisness and was wondering if setting up a matchgrade RF (read Bill Callfee, with the custom rb/lp action, tunners, ect..) in a clone to my 1000K lg stock (Shehane st1000) would help with my 1k shooting. My goal would be lots of trigger time, consentration on bench manners and being "smooth". I would set up all of my 1K gear. I DO NOT want it to be an exercise in wind reading.

I guess I wouldn't need to spend 3k on a match action, but since I am an accuracy nut.....well, you guys understand. :-[
