PPC bolt face

A Kelbly question came up in another thread about adding an ejector to an existing bolt. The OP stated that Kelbly told him they are now an Action Manufacturing Facility, not a Gunsmiths.

their bolts are now manufactured on CNC equipment. They cannot simply place a finished bolt in the machining center and some how reset the program to do a specific operation. It just doesn’t work that way.
They might not even have the personnel on hand who would take the time to set a manual lathe up to perform the operations required. Gunsmiths do this. This is in no way a disparaging remark against Kelbly, they have evolved with the industry in the services they are able to offer.

Opening the bolt face is easy. It‘s the extractor/ejector part that usually presents a problem. The PPC slide extractor might have enough travel, but the leading bevel might have to be widened so it will snap over the case rim. But keep in mind, the decent is in a very specific location from the centerline of the bolt face.

The easiest solution might be to add a Sako style extractor.

There are on occasion people looking for Panda bolts. Your best bet might be to sell the PPC boly and get a new bolt.

They must have a reason. My guess they don't think the extractor will work correctly.
They make a bolt and will sell it separate that works with both. It ain't rocket science! It only takes a gunsmith that has a fixture to be able to chuck the bolt with the handle on it.

It would need the handle removed to chuck it in the lathe without it. Then the expense of reinstalling the handle.

My Savage I have separate extracter made to fit my 308 bolt face and don't even have to replace my bolt head to go from BR to PPC. But it will not do both with either extrater.

I have an XP-100 that has a Sako extracter installed, I shoot BR or PPC with nothing more than a barrel change.

If it can be done with both these guns, and Kelbly can sell a bolt that does both, it can be done to an existing Panda ppc bolt, it may mean a different or altered extractor assembly, but it is done all the time, and a Panda is not an exception. Kelbly no longer does a lot of alterations to Pandas.

I'd bet Speedy can do it. But am sure their are others.

suggest that Kelbly’s has decided to quit modifying existing bolts and actions.
Jackie hit the nail on the head, they have changed their shop and machienery to pursue current needs. Big differance from a shop that's geared for production, and one geared for custom services.

Interesting. Maybe someone can turn your BR brass down to PPC specs and leave the bolt face "as is". Just a thought.

Butch Lambert has a lot of info on this.

A good way is to use a form tool. that way you can establish the rim diameter and extractor groove in one operation.

Of course, grinding a proper form tool is not that easy if you do not have an actual tool grinder.
