powders for 6.5 X 47 w 123 Scenars / 8 twist ?

I have a 8 twist hvy bbl - bought barrelled action 10 yrs ago - seller advised using his load - 8208XBR, which I used + has worked well. Not shot alot since.

What other powders should I consider for 123's ? I also have 139's...

info appreciated.

Geez! I thought this was that “old” thread. I’ll go check my book!
Ok! Got it.
Lapua brass
CCI 450 primer
H4350- 39.3 grains
Sierra 123s
This load gives me groups at 100 like this:
D51D5E8E-B03C-4862-8654-672E74E4F1E2.jpeg

My rifles have done better with Varget when using the lighter 120-130 grain bullets. H4350 is the clear winner when throwing 140 grain Hybrids downrange.

On your next barrel, give an 8.5 twist a shot with 123s and 130s. That 1/2 twist for some reason brings out the accuracy>>>> along with a 28" barrel! My 2 most accurate barrels were 28" and THEE most accurate was an 1-8.5 for the 123s. Now for the powders: It has been MY experience that RL-15, Varget, VV N540 and VVN150 produce the most consistent accuracy with BOTH 123s and 130s. VV N540 will cause them to scream out of the barrel>>>>but barrel life will be somewhat shorter.

6.5 X 47 Lapua :
Loaded Varget, H4350, VV N550; w/ 123g Scenars.

got out late today. snowing but calm. bench on the 'BLM" range.

.015-.025" +/- off lands (?) Kinda a shotgun approach to load testing.
pick a powder, load bit under max, a bit off lands and go to it.

Best was H4350 38.0g CCI 450

1/8 twist MTU Krieger 24" bbl.
brass had that donut deal.
5 in one hole, sorta.
Thanks all for the info!!

snowing, windy & bipod. :)

Question-why would you leave epander in the die with .289 bushing, wouldn't the epander be smaller in diameter than the bushing I.D? Just asking for my own info ,Awesome group

I could feel the expander pulling a TINY bit on the brass neck on the upstroke, so it was touching.
The .289 bushing is too small, but it was all I had on hand.
Going to order a .290" & .291" today.
Chamber neck is .295" ( engraved on bbl by Bob Green).

just wondering as I'm going through the same thing right now,I'm using a .287 as my buddy borrowed my bushings. With mine being turned I'm getting about .004 tension. I will go get my bushings today and put in the .289 or .290

I've had a couple of 6.5x47 bbls that were in essence, 'one-trick ponies'. Neither one of them shot worth a hoot with any of the loads that shot well in my other 6.5x47s, but they both did very well with S123MKs & IMR 4007SSC. I had a couple of 8lb jugs of 4007, and had found a few other applications for it, but nothing else I ever shot it in responded as well to it as those two bbls. Always wondered why IMR dropped 4007? I got a sale flier from Ron Shirk Shooting Supplies a couple of weeks ago that listed 8lb jugs of IMR4007SSC for $69.95 to FFL holders. Didn't waste much time calling to order three jugs of it. I may not live long enough to use it all, but at least I now have enough to experiment with to expand my applications for it again.

I had a Bartlein 1-8tw 30" medium Palma on a BAT 3L prone rifle that shot lights-out at 1000yds with Berger 130VLD Hunting bullets & RL17. I was getting a bit over 2900fps with the load I settled on, but that bbl quit shooting well with only 1200rds through it. Kind of makes me wonder what to do with the other two jugs of RL17 I've still got on hand...
