powder for 30-06 150-175 gr bullet

Would apreciate comments re: correct powder for lighter bullets. I am using H4350 for heavy bullets but it looks like it will require a compressed load with lighter ones. I want to work up a 600yd. target load.
Thanks

H4350, RL17, RL19 are all good choices in 150 to 168 grain bullet weights. You need accuracy as well as velocity, these should provide both.

I've used H4895, Varget, and H4350 in a couple 30-06 with bullets in the 150 grain class, I settled on H4350. Worked best for me in my rifles. I also use H4350 for the 175-180 grain and 200+ grain bullets. I've had tremendous mid-range performance (600-800 yd) with a mild load of H4350 and a 178 grain Hornady a-max and BTHP. When using heavier bullets I don't worry too much about achieving high velocity and prefer to let accuracy dictate the load. I've yet to compress H4350 when using light bullets and find velocity to be very respectable, around 3000 for a 150 grain pill in a 26" barrel. I'm sure there is more to be had if one felt the need. I don't load 150 grain bullets much anymore since I tried the heavier bullets.

Jeff Thanks for the G. Salazar reference. Agree, one of the best in the business. At his suggestion, I used a Serengeti Reamer in my '06 that has a 30" Krieger barrel and have developed a long range load using 215 Berger Hybrids. The load does have some recoil and I have recently acquired some 155 Lapuas from a buddy in a trade. Seems to me that a good load would do well out to 600 or so, then switch to the 215 for longer range. I also have plenty of H4895 powder so I'll use that as a gold standard.
Thanks again for reminding me of G. Salazar's post

Don't know if it makes a difference since I used factory 700 but I've tried several for my 30-06 (since 1980) and so far best results have been with IMR 4350 and 150&165 gr Noslers. 4320 also did well with the 150s

All mine were for hunting but when at the range before a hunt, I got 3 in one hole about .3" ctc. I don't remember the exact load but I have a 10 still in the safe from 1985. I don't think the powder lots still the same so it's a moot point.

Even years after, I was getting 3-4 shot groups that would all be touching when using 4350 and I just stuck with it. I couldn't get anything close to that as I tried out some other from IMR or others.

I would check out RL-15 if I was curious, and Varget or 4831. All said to work well.

Also, from what I've read, I think 4350 is made for the middle weight of 30 cal and and may be a bit fast for the heavier ones over 168.

Justification for several pounds of several new powders! Try several and I hope you find something that brings it all together

Shot some rough preliminary loads with 155 Lapuas, 48 H4895, .005" off. At 200 yds, one 5 shot grp using F210M was 7/8" with 3 in 1/8". Another grp. using WLR was 1" with 4 in3/8" and the called pull opening it up to 1". No case head expansion with any loads.
Plan to decrease jump and go to 48.5 gr. It doesn't look like I need to look much further since this accuracy is better than I can consistently shoot.
Thanks to all of you for your suggestions.

Great job Bill! Further proof that the 30-06 is far from dead. I'm continually amazed how many disregard the the 30-06 and feel it is "obsolete" in this modern age. Might have to take mine out this weekend for a little fun!

We have been shooting 155 gr. VLD's behind 59 gr. of H4831SC which has been a very reliable and accurate round for hunting.

When the .30-06 was "the" cartridge for high power matches at all ranges from 200 to 1000 yards, IMR4064 produced the best accuracy for the bullet weights spec'd here. 200's did best with IMR4350 for the longest ranges.

'Twas either Whelen or Townsend around 1940 that had an arsenal put IMR4064 in .30-06 ammo with 150-gr. ball, 165-gr. AP and 172-gr. match bullets and test for accuracy. With weighed charges to exact, best accuracy with all. But IMR4064 didn't meter as uniform as 4895. 4895 was their choice for costs, not accuracy.

Thanks for the information. I will try some when my H4895 runs out. It is very nice to have a historical insight.

I have been shooting 3006 for many years H414,Imr 4895 4350 & R-l9 using 165gr Noslers.
Last fall got some RL 17 man this powder aces all others in my eyes out of Rem 700 BDL 22" factory barrel 2825fps and shoots one hole at 100y 5 shots under 1/2" and at 300y 1.26"

Jeff - Don, here in WV - what grainage number of 4350 do you like behind the 150 weight class bullet for the '06? Many thanks. DonT
