The price was with me providing a barrel blank, removing my old barrel, chambering, threading and installing the new barrel for $300.

I'm not buying this. A barrel blank will cost your smith close to $300 by itself. Unless he's going to use an inexpensive barrel (e.g. Wilson), I think you're mistaken in believing that the barrel will be provided and included in that price. Krieger, Brux, Broughton, Hart et al will all cost $300+ and lead time of months, most likely. Just for the barrel blank.

I would offer another approach.
I would sell the 30-06 I did not use and buy a Savage action from a pawn shop a cbi or mcgowen barrel in what ever chambering I wanted ( maybe a 6br hint)a stock from stockys and put it all together my self and shoot under 1/2" 5 shot groups.
You will have spent 375 or less at the pawn shop 350 for the barrel 275 or less for a stock less than a 100 for a wrench and a go gauge
Sell the remmy for 400. Or trade it for the savage

Nothing like building your own that will shoot better than you can hold it
