Portable shooting bench design

Surprised I dont see more benches with carpeting. I use a quality marine short pile. Comfortable on forearms, insulating and stops brass and pens from rolling off the edges. Pita to glue n staple on but worth it to me. I have a water proof and dust proof cover for transport.

the last time my 9 yr old grandson was here he wanted to shoot but it was raining and he wanted to shoot his rifles .. so this is my latest !! i built this to move around as needed , it 6X8 built on a skid
that i move with the tractor or bobcat , has fold up windows . fold up shooting bench
and a bench to set other rifles on , has 12 volt power for lights and a solar panel on top
to keep a trickle in the battery . that boy going to be a shootin next time for sure .

i have carpet on mine to keep my arm off the hot top. but it does make for hard sliding of the rest.

I have a piece of 3/4 ply with formica on it and put that on carpet with the rest ontop of the formica side. Problem solved

As a wood worker and carpenter I love plywood - all kinds of plywood from rough cdx to fancy shmancy baltic birch in those weird metric square sizes.

I am curious if there’s a way to cut down on weight and keep the stiffness of doubled or tripled up 3/4 ply. Plywood is tough, but for the weight it’s not real stiff. Skinning a ply shelf with Formica seems to double its load carrying ability, but it’s not really light weight. A rib and skin construction, like a hollow core door, or airplane wing, sounds light weight, but with 1/4” ply skins and a number of hardwood ribs the weight savings isn’t great and anything thinner doesn’t seem stable.

Has anyone used a core of 2” foam and covered it in fiberglass or carbon fiber? Solid leg connections are still going to be key, but it seems doable to reinforce attachment points and recess it into the foam, rather than screw it to the exterior as would be normal with plywood. This coming year I’ll be shooting out in the sagebrush a lot more and I’m trying to find a table that‘s a little lighter weight than doubled up ply. A tow behind table is fancy, but not easy for me to store.

Maybe super light tables just aren’t the answer since weight helps settle then into the ground. That radaita pine plywood is extra light, but even less stiff. Doug fir ply makes my back hurt just thinking about it.

Use the same as Urbanrifleman. Easy up and down. Lays flat to transport. Very stable with the 3 Legs on any contour of ground. Only thing different is the chair . We use a Lifetime plastic folding chair. Need a back rest once in awhile for this old back.

Edit to me kicking this thread off: I made the square bench and it didnt work worth a shite unless I used my short stock rifle. So now I have a fuzzy table for my shop to put clean things on! I made another conventional one and longer to fit my long barrel shooter with extended bipod. I guess there is a reason why shooting benches have been L shaped since inception! Had to try though

you can get by with a thin top of you have 4 legs -but the legs have to be adjustable.
