Poor quality of hornady bullets

Any suggestions for replacing the Hornady 105 A-max for varminting....I have been waiting forever, and with no end in sight its time to move on....

Yep, I had waited for 4 months for .30cal amax's, I have had 6mm's on backorder for over 6 months. :P

Ended up cancelling and gettin SMK's instead.

For what it is worth to any of you and if it is any conslation, as stated I work for one of Hornady's competitors. We can purchase products through company sales, I have had primers, bullets, powder, and loaded ammunition back ordered for months, when I and other employee's complain they tell us CUSTOMERS FIRSTand you get any of the left overs ??? I imagine you will get your A-Max's before I get my Grande Slam's.

I shot a lot of AMax bullets in both .223 & 6mm and I thought they shot OK - no worse than 107 Sierras in 6mm. I was checking the zero as well as fire forming 50 6mmRAT cases with 87 grain Hornady bullets with iron sights off a rest at 100 yards and I thought they did all right. This was shot in 5 shot magazine strings to make the process go quicker.

I dont know why you would want to shoot the 87gr bullets anyway. Everyone knows that the 75gr bullets are better!! duhhhh!!! LOL!!! Just give them a call! they are a reputable company and they will make the situation right!! Lee

I was fire forming and the bullet choice didn't really matter. My only point is that they went in the center with no problem. I also shoot 75s

We have had problems with Hornady shipping second rate 223, 80gr AMAX bullets to Australia. Eighteen months ago their bullets would group well batch to batch but not anymore!

I have seen many examples of the 80gr AMAX bullets being covered in lead spots adhering to the copper jackets. A soldering iron was needed to melt it off and establish that it was in fact lead. Imagine what these lead spots would do to the balance of a spinning bullet!

Its pot luck now to see if a batch will group or not and it has been said that perhaps Hornady is dumping bullets to Australia that it cant sell on the local market. If they dont lift their game I'll be pursuing to have them taken off the NRAA approval listing.

gday Thunderdownunder,
our club down here in aus is looking at buying some of the 80 amax bulk 600 boxs. You mentioned some had lead splattering, is this easily seen on inspection of the pils? the price is good but if the things dont shoot, well its wasted cash. is the NRAA looking at dropping them.
cheers Pete

Midsouth recently sold bulk "blems" that by all appearances looked alot like the aforesaid bullets...in fact all the 224 blems I got at a great price had differing degrees of boattail on them....i will sort and use them in my close work where "minute of woodchuck" is enough. Hornady should make good on this. Keep trying. I have never had an issue with Amax, Vmax in 224 or 284 and they really have shot well for me.

The components shortages over the past two years has made many people's hobby practices problematic. Specific to 6mm and the Hornady QC question, I had an opposite/good result from Hornady products, their 75 grain V-Max. In Feb. 2009 I was doing refills on my 243 rat-splatters when my accustomed 85 grain Sierra HPs disappeared from the known world. The Hornady 75s were all I could find in any quantity of varmint type, so bought 200 and stair-stepped some loads. THEY SHOOT. I bought 400 more, and have continued with that bullet since discovering their close-clustering habits at 100 and 200 yards @ 3300 FPS/muzzle. Ground squirrels and jackrabbits HATE 'EM.

I don't understand what your trying to convey?

Hornady bullets are made in Grand Island. Federal makes ammo

If you are trying to say federal doesn't make bullets you are right, but they buy bullets from hornady, seirra speer barns, nosler, and others to produce there ammo, as a matter of a fact speer and federal are owed by the same Co.( ATK ) and they both experienced layoffs.....Water generally runs down hill.

I'm not trying to convey anything. Since the orginal post was about Hornady bullets and things go side track over to Federal and the link I put was about Federal. Try not to read between the lines.

Hornady bullets

Hornady bullets have lowered the bar.
I purchased a box of 180 RN for $27.95. They had a ring around the lead nose and the lead nose was smaller than my "old" bullets. I contacted Hornady and they told me to send them the bullets. Hornady called me and tried to blame my dies (Redding) for the rings. They sent me two new boxes of bullets. They had the same defect. I sent the new bullets back to them along with some of my good old bullets.
Hornady called me again. Fellow told me they had changed production procedures. "Save the reloader money" according to the fellow. He said "all" of the RN bullets would have that ring around the lead nose. He said the new procedure "pinches" the lead nose off during production. I told him that I would not load defective bullets. I told him to send me some 180 gr. SP that were not defective if that was possible. I got two boxes of 180 SPBT in the mail that look perfect. Joyce Hornady would roll over in His grave if He knew Hornady was knowingly making substandard bullets. Sad to see this happen. Of course they were calling themselves "Associates" on the phone for a while. That is until I gave them Hell for doing it. They are now back to"Technicians" as they should be.

I have shot Hornady bullets for 50 years with no problem. I shot thousands of them in Silhouette in the 80's with great results. If they are making bad bullets it is something new. You need to call them on it and find out what the problem is.

I agree there all junk and I think to save aggravation for all of you, you should box all your hornady bullets up and send them to me, I will pay shipping.

Wayne.... you might want to specify what calibers you want or you might have the delivery truck wearing your driveway out. lol ;D ;D ;D ;D

While I might have concurred with the subject title years ago, in the last year or so I have purchased a number of different sleeves of Hornady bullets and my opinion is they have really stepped up their quality. A few days ago I received three sleeves of 500 each of 75 V-Max 6mm's, 87 V-Max 6mm's and 105 A-Max 6mm's, and I have to give credit where credit is due - - they are nicely made and very consistent and uniform (all at a very favorable pricing as well).

I've used the V-Max's in 223 and 243 for years and never had a problem with quality but four years ago I switched to Noslers only because they shot better in my rifles.

Sierra is a another fine bullet, never had any quality concerns with theirs either.
