Finally got some reloads working in my .243

Been working most of last fall and all spring to get some decent loads working in my .243. I have tried many bullets and many powders with so-so results. Was recently pointed back in a different direction with my powder choices and finally getting results. Was told to try H4831 and go back to the Hornady 87gr V-max. These are the results laddering up from 41gr to 45gr, 44gr and 45gr are giving me superior results, all bullets are set for a .020 jump to lands all at 100yds.

Also tried Reloader 19 at 43.6gr and set to Hornady's length in the book (which is .050 jump in my rifle) and got this group... had one crazy flyer that was me so I shot one more round and it was right back in the group.

Looking good. Did you run any of those over a chronograph?

I loaded 90gr VLD in 243win with H-4831sc, in Winchester brass. 48.2gr H-4831sc got me 3,210 fps from a 22" bbl. That's as high as I loaded them. Best accuracy was around 47 gr.

His 87vmax load at 45 grains H-4831 is most likely in the 3,000-3,050 fps with 22" to 26" bbl.

I've loaded for many .243's over the years and always kept coming back to the Sierra 85 grain HPBT (Sierra #1530) and a modest load of H414. Seems to always shoot well and is a good combination for smallish whitetails and varmints.

Second the 85gr Sierra HPBT. Used that bullet with 43.5gr of H4831 for years and never had a 243 that would not shoot it great. Excellent bullet for deer or whatever.

When working with vmaxes, I always segregate by weight and ogive. Vmaxes give too my fliers for my taste. I can't argue with their terminal performance tho. That's why I go to all of the trouble.

H-4831 / H-4831sc always perform no matter the cartridge.

Ive gotten superb results even with 80 grainers in the 243win & H-4831sc.
Just to tack on here... So far in my 270win for 135matchkings 4831sc has beat out imr4350. More inconsistent threw out entire range of incremental testing but can't argue with a couple sub .5 and 1 .355 CTC 4 shot groups during first round of testing with that powder/bullet combo.
