Pistol ... Your Favorite ...

Okay - when it comes to money I try to get the biggest bank for my buck ... pun intended.

I've been looking at semi-autos for some time. Looking at 9MM, thought about a 40 S&W or 10MM, or possibly 45 Caliber. The 45s I like - historic nature as well as that big chunk of metal you shoot. However, the 9MMs are more in my price range. So ... I've looked and 9MM is my choice. In doing so - there is a wide range of prices and I just don't understand so I'm asking.

Ruger's P95 (black) runs in the $350 to $375 range - depends on where you buy it. You can jump up and pay over $600 for a Glock 19 (I might have this over priced) but still $200 more is my guess.

So - the Ruger P95 for $375 or the Glock.

Why would I want to spend the additional $200 for the Glock (or other "well known brand")?

Is the Glock or H&K or Sig more accurate? Better made?

You thoughts are appreciated.

Because its a glock! 2nd reason is its a glock! Just my opinion. Not a ruger fan. I would pick any of the other brands before the ruger.

Did I miss something or did you state your primary function? Concealed carry, target, hunting..... ;)

No - didn't indicate the purpose. Was just using the P95 @ $375 vs a Glock 19 and why pay so much more.

For ease of operation/accuracy purchase a double action revolver chambered in 357 Mag.
Shoot 38 special loads for plinking/training purposes.

If you have to have a semi auto in 9mm/40S&W or 45ACP purchase a S&W or Sig Sauer & don't look back.

The Glock,S&W M&P line is "combat Tupperware" & idiot proof in operation, but plastic framed.

The Ruger line, give to your worst enemy or cut them up to get them out of circulation.

Colt Python 357 Magnum - 6 inch barrel. Smithed by Alpha Precision. It has the sweatest action I have ever experienced. The most accurate revolver I own.

LE Hanson That's cheating....... ;) Try this , Have your LGS line up all the various makes you would like to try. Now pick them up 1 at a time and see how each feels in your hands, how do the sights line up(natural/or not) hows the trigger reach, Are the controls(mag release/saftey/decocker/ slide release in a good position for your hands/fingers. What type of action style do you prefer SAO, DASA, DAO. Lots of thing to look at. Is CC the primary or casual target/plinking . You want a reliable (your life or your families may depend on it) platform. Price and brand are last. I've chosen Sig. because of the previous criteria. Others my choose something else. Sig, H&K, S&W all score well and are ACCURATE to boot. Just don't pick on PRICE or BRAND alone.

in order for me to answer...i really would have to know your intended purpose...could be plinking....to full all out combat....to deer hunting...ccw...catch the drift?

I'm a Glock guy, they simply work, and work well, but a M&P with the full APEX treatment is pretty dam nice, not a Ruger fan, at least not in center fire semi autos, I f-ing hate XD's, not for any reason other than my HS2000 cost 189.95, Springfield bought the rights to it, renamed it XD, gave it a great marketing campaign and increased the street price over 100%. My suggestion is try before you buy, a lot of indoor ranges around me rent pistols, it will be money well spent. I don't clean my Glocks, I simply shoot them, abuse them, and when the day comes for cleaning, I'll let my wife do it in her dishwasher, my G17 is 20 years old, my G30 is 10 years old, and my G35 is 3 years old, all have many thousands of rounds thru them, none have ever malfunctioned, all shoot the same as they did when brand new.

Question was simple - not complex - why would you spend upwards of $200 more for one of the high priced 9MM over something like a Ruger P95 ... not talking about which is better for concealed, plinking, ... just why ... what do the high priced guns bring to the table than the lower priced guns.

You want 9mm? Semi-auto?

For carry, I love my P7m8, and a PSP in factory nickel would be nice.

For all-around use, I don't think the German-made Sig P22X series pistols have ever been surpassed for all-around quality, reliability, accuracy.

I have a German-made Two Tone like this:

Over 3600 rounds through it. Zero, I repeat, zero malfunctions.

Yes I've owned multiple Glocks, HK USPs, Walthers -- sold them all, and they are not missed.

Glocks function -- but I don't like the ergos, don't like the sights, don't like the mag release, don't like the unnecessarily fat grips, and don't like the unsupported chamber in .40sw.

I'm probably a bit biased here but my personal favorite 9mm is a commander length slide 1911 with a bobtail frame...custom built of course. ;)

But then I carry a Rohrbaugh R9 alot also.

Sure must be nice Joe to know someone who can build you them custom jobs. I can only wish. :)

Not sure why people are dogging the Rugers. In pistols I own several Kimber, Colt, Beretta, Taurus, S&W and a few others and my Rugers function just as well as any of them. I carry an LC9 and have had zero problems with it. Not saying my higher end pistols don't shoot nicer than the low end ones because they do. I too just don't like a Glock but have friends and family that just love them. When it comes to self defense, shooting good quality ammo is also a must.

I have to agree with the "Snake". Don't understand the negatives on the Ruger, the P90 45 I own three of them the most I paid for any of them was $350.00 or so new. They are tough, simple and just keep right on shooting.

The Glocks don't do a thing for me when compared with other semi auto's, but I also do understand they have a Big following. The only Glock I ever owned a model 21, I just wanted for it to go away, ended up swapping it for a new in the box old model Smith and Wesson model 59. Great swap as far as I was concerned.

I own a lot of pistols, and have a pretty good collection of both Smith and Wesson and Colts. Hands down if I could only own one pistol it would be a Python. I have four of them so I am glad I can own as many as I want, I am also glad I have them already as the price for a Colt Python today is bordering on the ridiculous.

If limited to only these two choices.... Glock, easily.

If you expand the field, pretty much everything EXCEPT the Ruger, easily.

I have Ruger shotguns, rifles, rimfire pistols and even an LC9, so it's not that I dislike Ruger.

But their full-size centerfire handguns? They are clubs, that look clunky, with way too much bulk, and poor ergos (in my hands at least). It doesn't matter the intended use (concealed carry is definitely out with a Ruger), they are just not a great design.

You pay more for better fit, better overall design, more "refinement" (and that's a category that Ruger loses in badly).

Reliability and function is OK (in a handgun, I want GREAT, not just OK).

Having one in my hand, and looking closely at it, they just don't inspire confidence or ANY pride-in-ownership in me (and yes, those intangibles count when I buy a firearm).

Whether you like Glocks specifically or not, I would definitely expand my scope and find something other than the Ruger.

S&W 1911 full size and the Kimber Ultra CDP II for carry everyday !! 45's are awesome stopping power !! The 9mm the attacker still comes at you...almost always !!

full size? Cz75b heavy, but a great gun. Of course if I could only have one pistol it would be a 1911. Like some of the other posters, I would prefer a revolver. Don't be afraid of the Rugers. Owned a bunch, as fas as a manufaturers go, I have had less issues with Rugers than quite a few high end brands.

Hi, I have to say I like steel and wood better than plastic. However my wife wanted a Glock 19 because one of her novel hero's uses a Glock 19. She shoots about 2,000 rounds per year just at targets and plinking. I don't know of too many guns where you shoot them until you can no longer touch them, too hot, then dunk them or pour a bottle of water over/in them shake it out and keep shooting. So I bought a Glock 21. Didn't like the sights, so I replaced them $90.00, trigger pull I disliked, so I put in 3.5 lb. trigger kit about $35.00. Results are a pistol that will shoot 2 to 3 inch groups at 21 yards all day long, never out of the x ring. If you need a smaller gun a Springfield xd9sc is a nice pistol, accurate and reliable, but I hate the grip safety. All of these have shot many thousands of rounds with a hand full of fte's/ ftf, mostly due to handload issues.
Hope that helps Oldhoward

For defense and IDPA shooting i like the Glock 17 Gen3 with RTF2 frame surface best. 9mm.
For accuracy a 6" S+W Revolver in 357 Magnum is my choice.
For daily carry in the vest pocket I use a Beretta 950 in 6,35 - modified with a side adjustable rear sight. ;)
