Pistol info.

Whatever you do don't buy anything until you have had a chance to pick it up and handle it, hopefully shoot it!

I tried the Glocks, i just didn't like the feel of them at all. Then I tried a used Browning 9mm Hi Power, Belgian made, all steel! NO damn plastic! It just fit my hand like it was meant to be there.
Bought it right then and there!

If for any reason I couldn't own the Browning (above) I would get something from the SIG family of hand guns as already mentioned.

Good luck

FORUM BOSS hit the nail on the head.

A German made SIG P series will out shoot any combat tupperware or 1911 in the hands of a novice, any day of the week & twice on sundays.

I am not a combat tupperware user.
Glock's grip angle does not fit my mitts w/ too steep of a grip angle.
I've challenged numerous Glock users to come out to shoot at -20 to -40 deg F ambient.
They talk the talk but will not walk the walk.

No mistake, I love 1911's & own Les Baer,Ed Brown,Para,S&W 645/745/4506 945's,Colt's/Nat'l Match.

Springfield,Browning,EAA,Taurus,Kahr isn't in my equation.

For a carry or comp gun,I'd pack/shoot a SIG or S&W.

This is going to be the trouble area. I agree 110%, but live up here in the sticks. I get to Grand Forks and Fargo (ND) and hit the only places I know with inventory..Cabellas and Scheels. I have about $700.00 worth of Scheels browny points, so that is probably where I will buy. I would LOVE to find a store that has a decent inventory. I am going to spend some time in Pheonix Az in May...maybe I can find a superstore" down there and handle a few!!

THIS IS AN UNDERSTATEMENT......

I have owned just about all of the above for either USPSA production class and/or IDPA ESP. I keep going right back to my M&P pro 5". I have done some work to it but even straight out of the box they shoot great! My second favorite is the CZ Shadow. The gun is a bit heavier and I don't like SA/DA much for weak hand shooting. Also the CZ is harder to get it IDPA legal. The Glock 34 is my third choice because it doesn't fit the hand or shoot as nice as the prior two. STI 2011's are also great guns and I loved mine. It is too big and heavy for me.

4xforfun,
Check out 1911.com and AR15.COM ( CLICK ON THE 3-GUN in upper right corner ). The S&W M&P PRO with an APEX trigger system is very sweet!!!! Works well for USPSA and 3-gun. If I am shooting Single stack in USPSA its a 1911& 185 gr Hornady HAP BULLETS. Go to a 3-gun or USPSA shoot and check out what the competitors are using. Then get the pistol that FITS YOU and your budget. Shoot it awhile in stock form before doing any modifications and don't go cheap on the belt, holster, magazines and mag pouches !!! OH ! AND DRY FIRE PRACTICE, DRAW PRACTICE, LIVE FIRE PRACTICE. Check out the Brian Enos website for drills and equipment ideas!!! ENJOY!!

Actually, my love of my M & P shield got me looking at the M & P comp.....actually a step up (on paper, that is) from the pro. I just need to get some hands on with all, or at least most, of the sugjestions I have been given. Right now on my radar is the S & W, the CZ SP-01, and the Sig 220/226/228. I have access to several Glocks and will look at those also.

Big thanks to all out there who gave me your .02!!!

Tod

FWIW, if you intend to shoot sanctioned matches I don't think you can have a ported barrel that comes with the comp model. Thats why you will see most shooters with the straight pro model with an apex trigger, apex ram, and speed shooter specialties magwell/baseplates.

No. I am way too old, way to blind, and way to broke to start another "serious" hobby like compeditive shooting !! I can say that I am handy with A rifle, but a pistol..well...not so much!!! ;D

Actually, in the "getting serious about another hobby" department, I am trying to talk myself into (or out of) putting together a "tactical/steel" type long range match. Although I have the shooting stations and rout figured out on my property, and have targets from 200 to 1700 yards already out, I just don't know what all goes into running a match or how they work. Actually, I am scared to even ask!! LOL

I shoot my fair share of handguns... personally id do an STI for a target gun, or if i wanted to save a little more money id do a glock or springfeild xdm target gun... there are TONS of upgrades for glocks to get them shooting WAY WAY WWAAYYY better than factory... $100 in glock upgrades makes you never want to shoot a factory glock again... i fix up all my glocks now... springfeild fits best is my hands out of everything though... its a toss up for me... but itd be one of those three.

You cant beat practice with a pistol to help you with trigger control on a rifle. If you have a flinch, anticipate recoil, bad finger position on the trigger ETC. A range session with a pistol will rat you out in a second ! They are truly "unforgiving" of any error.
Ask me how I know...... ;)

Yep...a couple of years ago when I was testing for my ND class 1 conceal permit I FLUNKED the shooting part the first time using my new XDM in 45....in front of 25 other locals. "you can shoot 3" groups at 1000 and can't hit sh*t at 7"!!! God, I took some verbal abuse!! Someone handed me their Ruger Target 22 to re-test and I shot itty, bitty groups at both 7 and 21 yards. My (X) brother in law is an instructor for homeland security and later gave me some pointers on "rapid fire" trigger control. We are going to spend some more time together this summer!! ;) ;)

I shoot steel at magnolia in ms. The cz's rule. But those guys are instructors.
Sigs don't stay in the race. 1911's are big there
I & a few others shoot a s&w pro.
Of course glocks with 5" barrel ... I don't know model.
Long barrels are the norm.
Come on to magnolia, open steel matches 2 times a month.

I am a huge 1911 fan...and a 45ACP fan. I married my wife for her pistols! She has a very decent 9mm collection from 1911's to H&K's.

She has wrist issues and after she shot my 45ACP with a 185 semiwadcutter Bullseye load. She is no longer a fan of 9mm. It is much less snappy and softer recoil.

Now my 38spcl S&W Target with double end wadcutters is a powder puff in the recoil department.

+1 on the M&P Pro

You cannot beat it with the Apex trigger, interchangable back straps to fit any hand and you can go to the CORE model set up for the red dot sights right from the factory. It will shoot with any other tactical class 9mm to include all the SIGs except the 210 but then it is $2000 plus.

OK...to all you S&W fans. Lest just say that I will NEVER compete in any sanctioned match, so the ports are not a problem. Lets also say that the $200.00 difference in price also doesn't matter.

Would you STILL buy the Pro over the ported Compitition?

Why?

Had I not started this thread I would have just simply baught a S&W comp. I am REALLY glad I asked the masses on this form!!!!

When you say would you by the pro over the ported competition....
You know the pro comp comes in ported now too ?

If I knew I wasent gonna drop another 500 on red dot sights
I wouldn't have bought the core Model.
I got mine before the ported came out. :-\

Ports does not play a role in anything but competition except it looks cool.
You want to spend 200 more to look cool ? It's your money.

been shooting 1911's since the first parkerized one the army issued me in 54. had a dozen or more and still have a couple,

the sweet load I use because of that guy Arthur i tus that came to visit is 200 Keith cast at a velocity of 900fps, a number of powders work with the combo and cost is modest after you get the molds and sizing/lub equipment.
load also meets action pistol energy levels,

I have shot a lot of them at 850fps just practice. very accurate.
