Pistol info.

Even if I didn't shoot sanctioned matches I would still prefer the non ported pro. Here is why. I shoot 147 grain xtreme or berrys plated bullets so muzzle flip and recoil is already a minimum. For a second reason I don't like how much louder ported barrels are. For three I try to keep the blow back to a minimum and all ported barrels seem to increase blow back. Put that extra $200 into an apex trigger.

Unless you are using the gun exclusively for gun games, and in particular gun games where extremely fast shot sequences are required (as in steel challenge), then stay away from ported barrels. IMHO, they are not a good idea if you ever plan to use the gun for defensive purposes in low light. You'll see big jets of flame. And, with some dirtier loads you'll get hot soot in the face. Here is an actual shot in Daylight, frame taken from Miculek video. Imagine the flash at night in your darkened house.

For daylight gun games -- no problem... But I understood the OP was interested in a do-anything handgun...

Again this will only be for plinking. Lately, I have been throwing clay pigeons out on my berm, but am thinking about getting some "steel" to plink at.

Update.

Went into store today to handle some pistols. Glock, S&W, Kimber, more Glocks, ect. I picked up a Sig 226, and in less time than it takes a bullet to make it to the 1000 yard line I blurt out..."I'LL TAKE IT"!!!

I REALLY need to work on my impulse control !!! It REALLY wreaks havoc with my haggling abilities!!!

Big thanks for all your help.

Tod,

I hope you enjoy yours as much as I have mine. One of the better "impulse buys" I've made in quite a while, too. Now, off to get some plate targets ordered... ;). Have fun!

That is what started me on the Sig wagon. I had the shop owner put all the 45 pistol brands on the counter...picked up each one and pointed (blank wall).... The Sig just "FIT" that was back in the early 80's...Been buying them ever since. I do miss the accuracy of the German ("formed") slides though.

Years ago, ready to buy my first defensive weapon (grew up without even locks on the doors in rural 'Merica) I announced that I was going to go buy a glock. A friend delicately asked me how well I shot the glock and I told him I never had. So, being engineers, we went to the range and rented a glock, a sig, a beretta, and a few others. I kept coming back to the glock but it came in 3rd for accuracy.

I ended up with the sig P226 and now own (undisclosed). I like them a lot. I don't shoot competitively but when I go to the range I often notice that my groups are smaller than the newbie in the lane beside me--shooting his new AR-15. LOL.

Since then I find the 227 and 1911 are both a bit more accurate for me.

Any pistol can be accurized but you have to start with one that you can point accurately.

Enjoy your sig.

It was purely a comfort thing for me. It feels better in my hand than my Ruger single action six...my previous favorite!!!

I ran a couple of clips through it last night in the basement at 7 yards. Definate improvement in accuracy over my 45 XD/M!!

The two best 9mm's for me in terms of natural pointing pistols are the SIG P226 and Browning Hi-Power. The Browning has been a favorite since the 70's when I first shot one. The SIG fits my large hand perfectly.

I guess I'm a Glock fan boy but they are inexpensive, tons of after market parts and easy to install everything yourself. Probably not as easy to learn fast shooting like in IDPA or 3 gun but with practice they can be as fast and accurate as anything. I've shot IDPA with G17s, G34s and a Wilson 1911 and can't say I was any faster with the single action trigger than I was with the Glock and a upgraded trigger. The Smith poly pistol is as good just not quite as modular as the Glock. Same for the Springer poly guns.
