Paypal scammers?

Alex Wheeler

First off, I could be total wrong here. I am not familiar with paypal and how it works. I have a scope listed in the classifieds on this site. I have had 3 persons with 1 post try and buy it, but back out after I wont take paypal, or a credit card. This makes me nervous. Why not just send a check if you want it? Is there a way to scam, or am I off base here?
Alex

Not that im aware of...but as you probably know scammers are always coming up with something different each day...I would follow your gut feeling on this one....You have positive trade counts and they dont....If they dont want to send a check or usps m.o. then its thier loss imo...you are already an established trader with nothing to prove...they are the ones that need to put you to ease...not the other way around

I know a lot of times I wont buy something in the classified if I cant pay with paypal simply because of the convenience. No waiting for the check to get to you, no waiting for it to clear your bank acct. And, with paypal, you have more evidence of your end of the transaction, if the seller doesnt send the goods.

Single digit posters and those who list Location in Spanish as United States should not even get a look..........

Good luck with your sale!

Alex,

Its just the way of "preferred" transactions these days. Everything is electronic and done via a credit card or other electronic means. Saves alot of time from the consumers standpoint. Just in the time it took me to reply to your post, I could have paid for something from Amazon and sit back and wait for it to arrive vs take the time and gas to run down to get a postal m/o, address it, mail it.

Conveinence is the name of the game. From my experience, PayPal transactions have been very smooth and very secure..

FWIW: I still prefer to deal the old fashioned way myself, cash..

Paypal and Ebay are the SAFEST way to do an online transaction there is... bar none. I never ever use my credit card online unless I have too.

You have more consumer protection rights on Ebay than any other place on the planet. Trust me. I am a seller. The BUYER is king on Ebay, and Ebay TRACKS everything right down to whether you received your item in a timely manner , whether you were happy, and whether the seller treated you right.

PayPal is owned by Ebay. They are the same thing.

You have the same rights using Paypal IF IF IF you accept money as an actual business transaction (NOT A GIFT). You can even use Paypal and Ebay shipping to ship your package (without having to go to the post office) and Ebay will track it for free. It is so easy... and more importantly safe.

I have used PayPal buy and sell without issues. However, it is your item to sell. Just set the terms (type of payment you accept) in the description and all is good. Nothing wrong with a USPO money order in my mind.

I have been scammed by personal checks for internet sales. I will not do that again. I think 99% of us are on the up. But - that 1% is who you have to watch out for.

Luck, Tim

The real problem is trust. The seller or buyer can pull a fast one and the authoritys will do nothing to help you when loss is obvious. They(postmaster general, cops etc)probably have a threshold on what is worth investigating an internet fraud claim and if you are under that amount ,good luck which is what happened to me.When buying guns a middleman such as a bank should hold the funds until both party's are satisfied(paypal) except paypal wont allow gun purchase's due to anti gun sentiment. The receiving dealer could accept payment and pay the seller once he send's the firearm but I am sure tax and another fee would come about. There is really no guarantee other than face to face for a good transaction to occur.

You are the "SELLER". It's your choice how to be paid. If you are not comfortable don't do it. It's not an emergency.
I take a look at the seller (or buyers) previous transactions on this site.
'TRUST'? Absolutely. 'Face to Face'? Ideal. 'Cash'? Perfect. The latter two are mostly impractical. The first.....that's where the reading of prior peoples experiences comes into play and gives you material on which to base YOUR decisions.

I prefer paypal most times because I can charge it to my credit card when I don't have the liquid assets to send a check/money order.

It is possible to get scammed using paypal, I've seen episodes of people complaining that product wasn't received or not as advertised, etc.....paypal giving them back their money and the seller not getting his product back, so the buyer got his cake and ate it too.

i find it very strange the supposed GUN PEOPLE will do business with and thru two ANTIGUN COMPANIES..paypal and ebay. why not just send money to obama ??
do any of you realize that for your CONVIENCE you are putting money..your money in the hands of the anti gunners ??

go read paypals rules ..read ebay rules.
before any of you come to thier defense and say it is a liability oR leagal issue...go look at all the sites that operate selling guns and ammo with no liabiliity or leagal issues.

You hit the nail on the head there Mike.

To answer your question, yes, you can be scammed on PayPal and they will tell you that they are sorry and that's about it.

Accept the payment as a 'gift' to try and save fees and you are even more at risk. They will not pursue those transactions at all.

I have a totally different reason for using PayPal.

Sure, I like it because it is as safe as any payment form. But, complaining I am giving money to anti-gunners is absurd.
Those in the gun trade that don't like PayPal and insist on Postal Money Orders are forcing their customers to pay a REAL premium to the government! No one more anti-gun them those folks!
PLUS The money orders are not nearly as safe for the BUYER as they are to the SELLER. If that letter with your money order in it is lost, just try to get your money back!
I am sometimes really up set when some seller is adamant about NOT taking anything but Postal Money Orders. That guy is the ultimate of selfish. He has no concern of the customers convenience or safety!

I do not have a paypal account and have lost some sales to it. I have nothing against it but for some reason or another will never have 1. Just not interested. I just go with the flow and could care less how they want paid or i get paid and just do it. If its 20 years of saving change i will take it. ;D I am never in a rush to receive or buy anything. If something does not work out it is all good with me as their is always something else around the corner or most the time, i really did not need it anyhow.

Paypal is nice , within a day or so you can transfer the money to your bank real easy or spend it using paypal with the same funds

Pay-Pal is just as safe as any money order, and certainly as safe as a USPS Money Order. I sold some stuff on E-Bay and was paid with a USPS money order. It was counterfeit and my bank didn't find out about this until 6 weeks later. The Post Office was no help at all wouldn't even give me a place to start. So I will never take another money order from anywhere ever.

The USPS is also anti gun. They are a part of the Gov't and the gov't is the one trying to pass gun control, so that when you "BUY" a USPS money order you are supporting a group that is just as Anti Gun as Pay-Pal. There are no good choices here NONE, I am now taking Personal Checks only and waiting until they clear and I have the money in my hand before I ship anything. Even this isn't fool proof but right now I think it may be best. If there is a better way someone please share that...

All I know about PayPal is that my account was hacked and my bank account emptied in about twenty minutes for over 3K. Luckily my bank protected me because I contacted them immediately and reported the theft.
PayPal was Totally unresponsive to me and accused me of giving someone my banking info when the transactions were clearly through their ogranization. IMO they are a total POS organization and I refuse to have an account with them. If I use them it is with a credit card only and never to open an account. Just one man's experience with PayPal for what it is worth.
