Panda Barrel Swaps

I’m of another school. I never take my scope off and I have never had a problem as a result of leaving it on when I remove or install a barrel. I also sell custom rear entry action wrenches in tee handle or 1/2 inch square recess configuration. The recess is for the use of a torque wrench if you are so inclined. We make the action wrenches custom to any action. I don’t advise the use of a port action entry action wrench because I’ve seen the scarring it can do if not properly used. I also sell barrel vises.

For barrel vices here is a trick I learned in the last couple of yrs.

Most of us use some kind of paper between the barrel and the vice so as not to leave marks on the finish of the barrel, but I often got slippage. Take a piece of 400 grit sandpaper with the tacky back, wrap the barrel with the abrasive out, never have I had one slip since. (Al Warner showed me that one on a very tight barrel)

No way id ever pop a barrel loose with a good precision scope- but thats just me. Sometimes it breaks loose violently. I try to only jar my scopes with recoil. Ive had too many go bad to take chances.
Rumor has it that you can break a bowling ball also.

I try to listen to the HOF shooters when they offer advice. Gene Bukys advised me many years ago to remove the scope when changing barrels. At the SS one year Dwight Scott advised me to use more torque when tightening my barrel (according to him just snapping it up is not enough). I'll add one more suggestion given by Pat Byrne. He told me not to depend on "feel" when setting shoulder bump. He said get a "doo hickey" and MEASURE the before and after results. He went on to say that many over "bump" their case with the feel method because what they feel is friction at the base end of the case. Good shooting.....James

I really appreciate the info guys. I'll get a vise and wrench ordered in the coming weeks, and I'll make sure to pull the scope each time.

On a somewhat related note, getting barrels turned for these without the action isn't as easy as the internet might have you believe. Although I haven't contacted Kelblys yet (I'm sure they'll do it), I ran it past my usual smith, a few other local guys, as well as some larger shops...all of them want the action to chamber a barrel.

I think some of the folks I talked to just like having the action out of principle, but others have mentioned something about clearance for the coned face? I was kind of looking forward to getting barrels chambered without having to do without a rifle for once.

Either way, I'm thinking I'll buy 5-6 30 cal blanks, have them spun up at once time, do break-in/load dev for all of them on one action, and shoot the other in matches.

Many and I mean a-lot of smiths do Panda barrels without an action. Thats the nice thing about a Panda you have a print...If in doubt send a known barrel to your smith and he can measure that one.

i cant think of a good one that WANTS you to send in the action. Stay in texas and send it to mike bryant

I have five Pandas and all the bbls. interchange wit -0- issues. I have Greg Walley, former lead riflesmith do all my chambering and he has never asked for a receiver. For the few minutes it takes to remove a scope and replace it, I can come up with a single reason to NOT remove the scope. If it were a $50.00 cheapie scope I didn't care about, maybe. But a NF or a March...why risk it.

Opinions are like, well...you know.... Me, I'm sending the guy the action on the first go around, especially if it is a used action. I'm not leaving anything to chance. After that, there is no need. YMMV
