PA whitetail

Yes, they do have rack requirements. And yes, in y opinion they do produce more trophy bucks taken. They also have no Sunday hunting, which (being a Christian) I beleive is one of the dumbest things they could do. Cuts out a lot of potential hunts.

Not trying to derail the happy vibe.

I am still debating what rifle to hunt with tomorrow. Forecast says 50% rain. I don't want to take dad's m88 in the rain. So I think it will be great grandpaps 1884 Springfield Trapdoor. Wish me luck! Longest shot might be 75 yards.

The game PA Commission allows 3 Sundays to hunt, which are in the month of November. This Sunday 11/26 being the 3rd & last Sunday for deer hunting. This past Sunday 11/19 was the 2nd day of bear rifle season & the previous Sunday to that, (11/12) archery hunters got to hunt on Sunday.

Don't know what part of the state that you now reside, but in southwestern, PA there is only a 5% chance of precip tomorrow. Now on Sunday, they are saying a 65%-70% chance of rain, which is supposed to come in the afternoon..

My 63rd first day. Half as many hunters as when I started. Lots of archery and muzzleloader kills resulting in way fewer folks afield. After lunch time even less. Point restrictions is the best decision for deer hunters PGC has done. Hunt safe, enjoy the day in the woods. Sniping across fields is great for varmints, I much prefer to harvest deer in the woods.

I’ll be hunting a field in Greene County tomorrow. It’s a good place to hunt. The best part is that it’s easy for me to get to since I’m somewhat diminished at the moment. Shouldn’t be many in my area so the deer should move pretty naturally which bodes well for the field adventure. Good luck tomorrow.

This will be my 50th first day here in Pennsylvania. I understand bringing it in on Saturday but sure do miss the Monday opener. I’ll be in Venango county in area 2D. I will be using my pre-64 model 70 in 250-3000 Savage. Still rolls deer like a shotgun rolls rabbits!

what a fine rifle always wanted a 250/3000.....

They were all at my spot on public land today Jeff….lol

I’m in Lancaster county and the Amish don’t care about anything and have no etiquette whatsoever. They will walk 30yds in front of you even when they saw you from 200yds away. Me, if I see a hunter I go a different direction. If I keep seeing hunters I go back to the truck.
Last year my daughter and I were in our ladder stand that was there all archery season. At 7:15-7:30 opening morning for rifle 5-6 Amish come barreling thru the woods trying to drive deer. An hour into deer season.
Today I could see an Amish guy walking into the woods at 3:30pm with his 30year old climber. I bet it was dark by the time he found a tree and climbed it…

It’s public so they have as much right to be there as I do, but they need to learn some hunting etiquette. Atleast I shouldn’t have to deal with them tomorrow…lol

Sorry. Rant over…lol

Update:

I saw 18 doe....they surrounded me, pratically climbed in the stand with me. But not a single rack to be seen. Tomorrow I will whack a meat doe with the trapdoor if I see any.

I also had a fox squirrel the size of a brick climb the tree I was in.

I took the Ruger 77 MKII in 280 Rem out today.
Morning was a bust.
For me at least.
Friend got 2 does, his mother and grandfather each got 1 doe.
What a difference 200 yards makes in the woods.

I ran (ok, drove) up near Bennezette for the afternoon.
Saw 6 does (no shot) a spike & a 5X6 bull elk.

Then some kid starts stomping all around me & right through the middle of my firing lane.

We really NEED to teach hunting edicate to these youngsters.

He got an ear chewing from me as it was.

My Savage Axis II in 250-3000 Savage (24" barrel) could hardly be claimed to"roll deer like a shotgun rolls rabbits".

Does it do the job? Yes..
Are there more effective options? Yes.

My 257 Roberts puts down critters much faster.

Ok, a good day on Pa public ground. I shot an 8 point about 9:30. He was on the sneak. I saw movement just to the edge of what I could see, thought it was a hunter.....but no orange. It disappeared for about 15 seconds that I saw where it emerge out of the brairs another 50 yards away. It was about 200 yards away, front third stopped behind 2 big tress just as I spotted him for the second time. Another step and he is out of sight. So I went for the spine offhand, and it was not his day. Crack....he vanished. Watched for a bit and saw nothing. Went over and he had never taken a step . I was lucky to see him once ,much less twice. Pa mountian buck, good size deer, no trophy rack but these public land bucks in 22,000 acres tract with not many hunters are a challenge. Might be a good day to remember as my last Pa deer hunt, my 63rd opening day. I will go back with a GPS and check the distance. Too thick for a range finder..243 Tika T3, 100 gr Nosler Solid Base.About 8 :00 I saw a buck about the same size in amongst 7 does but no chance for a safe shot on him.A balmy 19 degrees all morning.
