Out of the box options

My first post here so let me say I have and stil am shooting custom Remington 700's.
That being said what would be your 1st choice for a tactical/target rifle in .308 right out of the box. I mean slap a good scope on it and go shoot.
Thanks for having me here and look forward to all the knowledge sharing!

IMHO, you cannot outshoot a Savage rifle sold across the counter and out of the box these days. I've bought my sons a variety of different manufacturer .308's (over the past 5 yrs) and clearly the most accurate is the Savage, probably because of the barrel. Just gotta get past that damn Accutrigger which I detest and believe it is a worthless POS for competition, which is why serious competitors don't use Savages. I've changed to Sav2 triggers to overcome the issue.

Your larger experience with Savages mirrors my less extensive as I own two 116s and two 10ML-IIs and now a new 10fcp in 308.
I am expecting at least very good to excellent accuracy foe a factory rifle as all my other Savages have been great shooters. The 10ML-II smokeless MIs I own wildly exceeded my accuracy expectations but I did get both glass bedded but that was it all else is factory original.
When I went liking for a rifle for the same reasons as The OP and I stumbled across a Savage 10FCP in 308 for $435 TMFFL after $100 MMIR, I jumped on it.
For a factory rifle and for the money IMHO I don't see how you can beat a Savage.

Tikka CTR, 24" barrel if you can find one. Or perhaps their T3x TAC A1 chassis rifle. Replace the trigger spring for a good pull, less than $15.00, and they shoot great.

Second the vote for Tikka T3X TAC A1. I just bought one in 6.5 Creedmoor and, so far, it seems to be everything one could want in a factory "precision tactical" rifle. This one shoots very well so far with factory and my reloads. It features the metal chassis with folding butt, adjustable cheek, adjustable butt plate, threaded muzzle (5/8x24), MLOK fore end for all kinds of add-on goodies, scope mount, two stage trigger that breaks at two pounds and comes with two ten-round magazines. The mags seem very well designed and feed all I've tried so far.
Second would be the Ruger RPR Gen II. Lower price than the Tikka and feature laden. Not to mention it can feed from AICS or Magpul AICS type magazines. Not quite as smooth as the Tikka but I've seen several at PRS style matches and they are good enough.

I've had excellent luck with Cooper firearms out of Montana. I have a couple of model 22 phoenixes, one in 220 swift and 6.5 x 284. They are kind of pricey but you get what you pay for. I think they may make some type of tactical model now, check out their website.
