Optimal Barrel Length for 6XC

I'm fairly new to the 6XC and unfortunately haven't been able to find much info online about what barrel length people have been using. Will be ordering an 8-twist Broughton 5C barrel this coming Monday, and need to know what length has been working best with the 115gr bullets for 1k shooting. Would prefer to stay at 28" or less, but will go up to 30" if needed.

Jim.....
my 6XC is a Pac Nor 27" SS SM 8 twist 3 groove...no taper....using nut with 1.055" at muzzle....yes, going on s/shot Savage action, so it will shoot, right?? Will put it together this week, wait for brass, then dies. I'm frugal, so Lee is building my dies for $50. But need brass now !! Waiting for brass from Superior Shooting as we speak. I'll keep 'ya posted !!

Jim, I am contemplating doing the same thing as you. As of now I have narrowed my barrel choice down to Broughton or Krieger, and have thought about a 30 inch heavy palma contour due to my desire to shoot 1000 yds with savage action/stock. Just thinking that palma contour would have a little less weight. Havn't yet contacted krieger to ask if they will make a palma barrel in 6mm. I will watch this post to see what other shooters
reccomendations are before making final decision. Curious, why did you choose Broughton over Krieger. rick

From what I have been told 8" is iffy at best. 7.5" is called for by Tubbs and I got a Krieger 7". They didn't have the half inch extra. I figure better to err on the side of the 7 being ok, and 8 iffy. I have seen the 115's shoot out of a standard BR ok in one gun and not in another both being 8" Hart barrels, if memory serves me correct.

Also my smith said just an hour ago get in line for the brass. He has been waiting for two months ans still no shippment they are expecting any day now. Time will tell. If all else fails get some 22-250 and make it.

Main reason for going with the Broughton barrel is because they donated it for the project. 8-twist is the fastest they offer in the 6mm, so it will have to do. Fortunately, in my experience with Savage's they can usually go a little hotter than other brands before getting pressure signs. If this holds true with this cartridge, I should be able to get the 115's to stabilize no problem. Currently pushing 80gr. Noslers @ 3380fps in a 8-twist 22-250AI if that's any indication.

Big holdup right now is finding a reamer. None of the usual renters have them yet, and my gunsmith has no intentions of buying one until the cartridge is more proven and there's a decent demand for it. Outright buying one will really stretch the budget for this rifle, so if anyone has one they're care to rent out I'd be interested. If push comes to shove, I may just have to ask Chris at PacNor for a favor.

I have seen three 6BR Norma's shoot the 115's now. Two have done very well at 1000y. Actually, each of the shooters has done about on par with what they shoot when using 107's.

They run quite a bit slower though, and the 115's needed 5.5moa to my 3 moa wind with 107's.

I'm waiting on 300 6XC cases, and now, dies, before I build. I don't want to form, but without dies, I couldn't if I wanted to.

At any rate, I'd keep the barrel as long as you can. You can always cut more off. It'll run ya about $40. Try putting 2 more inches on, and see what that costs.

Chris...

The broughton 5C is an outstanding barrel and my choice over all others even if I had to pay for it:). The guy Tim has working for him is as skilled as they come. As far as I can see right now, I will only be using broughton in the future.

I have a 30" Broughton 1-8" twist, and a Kreiger 1-7.5" twist also 30" haven't shot the Kreiger yet, the Broughton barrel is great! I also have a 6.5x284 w/Broughton and they are the slickest least fouling barrels I have had. I am using formed Win. 22-250 cases now - just started load development - up to 39.5 grains H4350 w/both 107&115 - no pressure @ 2950 going to add more powder and see what happens. So far accuracy and E.S. is good
