Barrel lenght for 6xc ?

Hi guys, how short can i have a 6xc barrel and still make late 2900 fps with 115gr ?Im shooting a 28" 1/8 and no problems making 3000 fps with berger 115gr non moly (40.2gr of n160 ).New barrel will be 1/7.5 and am thinking of around 25" !

I dont know, but I shoot a 24" standard 6X 1/8 Hart and a pretty stout load to make 3050fps with a 107 Sierra.

I would leave it long.....

Barrel length isn't the limiting factor here over case capacity and powder choice for the 115's.

I've gotten 3,200 fps using coated DTAC 115's but brass lasts maybe two firings & the accuracy isn't anything to brag about either.

(I'm running a 30" Bartlein 1:7.8 with Berger 105VLD's (home-coated with hBN) at 3,120 fps using 37.0 grains IMR 8208XBR.)

If you're getting 3k now with those specs I'd have to say why go shorter?

If you HAVE to go with less, maybe something around 27"?

2,900 ought to be easy to reach though the faster twist may show pressure sooner....

What im doing is using the 6xc as a multi purpose rifle.Shorter barrel for hunting and longer heavier one for target .Dont see much references to many guys using n160 with the 6xc ......is there a reason for this ?If i were to use a shorter barrel for hunting is there a better suited powder for the 115 gr bergers ?Maybe if i changed down to the 105 vld hunting with a shorter barrel ,would i make good m/v ?Many thanks for the replys so far ,guys.

I'm pushing naked 115Dtacs at 2950fps out of my 25" 1:7.7 Bartlein with 38.4gr of RL17. With no pressure problems, 4 loadings so far on the brass, and excellent accuracy.

Several fellows that I know have shorter (25-26") barrels on their 6XC's. They are shooting 95gr and lighter bullets and utilizing either a 9 twist, 10 twist or a 12 twist barrel depending upon the shooter. I'm almost 100% sure that they simply went to R-15 powder, and one of those shooters is using R-15 and either Danzac or moly coated bullets. All of them shoot very well.

I've used the N550 powder in mine on a number of occasions. Wondered about the N560 & 160, but never tried it. From my experience with those two powders in other cartridges, it is no surprise to me that the 160 works well in your application. WD
