On beam scales part two

Hey guys, stop "snapping up" newly listed Lyman M5 scales on ebay :)
Guilty as charged! Just bought one that looks brand new on Ebay last week - shipped it to Scott today for accurizing.

I'm looking forward to an accurate/repeatable scale, because my Chargemaster I only use as a powder dispenser, my cheap digital scale weighs to the .01 but loses its zero too often, and my RCBS M500 has terrible repeatability. I'm currently using all three in my reloading process, but I'm looking forward to just using 2 (dispensing with the Chargemaster and finishing off with the M-5 Scott's going to tune for me.).

As long as I'm trickling up to scale weight, and dispensing short, I'm thinking of getting the cheap Lee Perfect model, because it doesn't cut powder kernels.

If you don't need 1000gr capacity these should work well. I picked mine up for about half what these are listed

These are excellent old scales, the only issue I have with these is the clunky old pan set-up. They can easily be converted to the later M5 or Ohaus 10-5 system.

I'm going to convert it, all I need is the scale pan support and I can use the pan off my RCBS 505. I've already figured how much weight needs to be removed from the support to work with the old 5-0-5 scale.

You may find that you will have to remove material from the pan support to achieve zero.

Yep, 90 grains should do it. I took the scale apart and found a couple issues, now the scale repeats nicely and the accuracy is good through the range with my test weights.

sparker--Do the old scales (Redding, Herters, Webster, Pacific) with the V bearing for the knives milled in the casting tune up good?

They are good ones. The magnets are located inside of the housing that the blade on the beam rides in - under the scale, there is a screw - loosen and remove that and the housing will come off.
...
I wedged them in there with balls of paper (probably toilet paper), cuz I didn't know if they would work-out well. They have been there all this time, without any problems.

I just noticed, you hogged away the tabs which the OEM notched magnets had to straddle inside the magnet cavities. I'm not keen on modifying my M5 which is like brand new. The original magnets are pretty weak. Is there a way to re-magnetize magnets, to restore some of their original strength?

They're 52s, waaaay to much. As I said I use only one N40(42) in my D5.

Those will fit nicely in my M5 without modifying the cast metal casement. But with the small tabs designed for the original notched magnets, the new N40s will be forced farther away from the swinging copper blade then the original notched magnets were. Do you feel these N40s will be effective across the larger gap?

I taped my n40"s in as temporary to see how it works, used 4neo's 1/8 by 1/4x 1/2 works great so far, tricky trying to put them in jumping around all the time but they are positioned fairly well and my scale will stop super quick and it's responsive to 1 granule of WIN 760 I have a5 10 rcbs

I didn't remember that (it WAS 40-ish years ago, in my rum soaked youth).
But some of these guys have found magnets that fit without modifying the scale.

The D5 originally had two 1/2" square x 1/2"(?) thick magnets held in place with screw through a "U" shaped clamp. The 40 I used is 1/2" square x 1/4" thick. To install it I tweaked the clamp to hold the magnet and a piece of foam rubber between it and scale body to take up the extra 1/4"of space.
At first I tried to use two 40s but it was a chore. With the first one in place when I tried to install the second the first one wanted to jump up and make love to the second one not to mention it smarts a little when you get a finger between them!:D
Anyway after some testing one 40 does the job. When I set the pan on the beam rises, over shoots one graduation above zero then back down and stops at zero regardless if the pan is empty or with 500grs of check weights.
I haven't played with the magnets in the 505 nor do I plan to, its pretty good with the originals as is.

Just got my mint condition M-5 from Scott. The scale is 100% as new and fully " Parkerized"...Couldn't be more pleased. The packing and shipping were A-1. This is my second scale from Scott.....Both i had him find for me. The M-5 is perfect for going on the road and loading at the hotel....Thanks again Scott. You are quite an asset to our community.

Best Regards
Rick
