O'Leary announces new refinery

EVEN if it could get started, takes years to build one.
We could go though a couple of presidents before it might be done.
With the way things and car companies are going towards batteries,
I don't see this getting farther than talk.

We will have to give those South American countries with the lithium deposits some "freedom" here pretty soon.

I hope your wrong, thats why I said we need a change in the WH for a couple terms.

The main problem is with federal regulations. Permits for a refinery will take years to clear.
By the time all the environmental impact statements are in, it will be 10-15 years down the road. Fighting all of the green crowd and the liberal federal judges that will back them will be a nightmare.
The cost of the build will be 30% higher up north compared to the gulf coast, due to the cold weather factor. It will have to be designed to run 24/7/365 no matter how cold it gets. Refineries can and do freeze up even on the gulf coast. It can be done if you spend the money up front. Retrofitting to make it weatherproof cost double.

It would be great to see it happen

You guys are screwed up. You have a 70 year old pipe line going under lake Michigan that they are afraid will leak but the state won't let the company replace it with new technology. Now that the libs have control of everything in Michigan you'll will be as screwed up as we are in California.
Michigan is my home state and I love it, but if the dems get any more power here and start making ridiculous laws, I’m going to have to find a new place to live. Dead Serious.

Won't be needed when commercial air travel is shuttered, and the 15 minute radius rule starts(2030). WEF wants all residents within 15 minutes of all needed commodities. You will be allowed 1 outside radius trip every 3 days( when your utilities and financial is under government control no side stepping regulations).

The problem with building a refinery in the Dakotas is the weather. To the point, the extremly cold weather many months of the year.

Have you ever wondered why areas like south East Texas and Louisiana have so many refineries and chemical plants? We get very few sub freezing days through the year.

Also, the statement that we have not built a new refinery in decades is a little miss leading. What the major producers are doing is expanding the existing ones. In fact, they would rather expand existing facilities rather than build new because it keeps production at one consolidated location with the already developed infrastructure, in particular water transportation for moving huge quantities of product.

https://www.okhistory.org/publications/enc/entry.php?entry=RE039 There is a small , but abandon refinery just 10 miles north of Weatherford, OK. Built by Barrett Refining in 1982. I don't know why it closed, maybe not large enough to be profitable. Main product was diesel and jet fuel. Was designed for 14000bbls per day, which is a very small number in what the operating refineries of today can handle. That parcel has changed hands numerous times, each time failing to get into production, as when closed by the last company nothing was drained-up. 99% of the piping and a large number of the vessels needing repaired or replace, with valves needing replaced/rebuilt. Cushing would be a good local. As that's where the pipelines meet that go south. There have been times when the tank farms there could take no more oil, being completely full with nowhere to go, as the refineries in south Tex were already working at full capacity. But it ain't gonna' happen! Biden wouldn't OK it. The next Pres will, if he's a Republican. But it would still face years of litigation by the 'greenies', and by then we'd likely have another "green energy", "no fossil fuels" nut in the White House. Until our Fed Government can face reality, and not just "blow and go", refining won't change much in the US. Meanwhile, China, India and the 3rd world will continue to pollute at will.

While i will agree its getting more liberal the last 3 years with all the influx, what about Oregon?
Oh <long string of profanities>.
Our governor, state legislators, Congressional Senators and most of our Representatives are nothing more than apparatchiks.
It makes me sick.
Wife and I went to Montana a year ago to look at property. We spent two weeks traveling all over, using Livingston as a base. There, Helena, Missoula - way too much stuff to appeal to foo-foo Kalifornistan escapees. Found a place outside of Anaconda, but it was too rough for the wife's tastes.
The prices were insane.
