OK more 284 stuff.

Howdy and how is everyone? Good here thank you. Now,on to another 284 Q&A.

A year ago I had a good friend and BR buddy build me a LA M700 284 win hunting rig. I was in charge of ordering the barrel. Well,I screwed up. I ended up with the #4 Shilen and man is this rifle heavy. (10.25 lbs).
002-3.jpg

It was supposed to be a walking deer rifle. Not so much. Not at my age and state of disrepair. It IS however a wonderful "stand" hunting rig. Easily 3/8 MOA with 150gr Nosler BTs. We cut the barrel @ 24" for the sake of handiness. I'm cool with that. I don't think I would want anything over 26 on a deer rifle. Just my preference. She is throated for the 150/160gr bullets. Here are my questions.

I see lots of posts here and other places regarding the 284 win. I see there are a BUNCH of folks running them in barrels up to 30" ! Am I on the wrong page? I'm not saying that I would want a 30" hunting rig,but am I short changing myself that much at 24"? Maybe I would be better suited with a 260 or such at 24"

I also see that the 168 and 180gr bullets are king in the 284. I never considered the 180gr bullet well suited to anything under .30. It is my favorite bullet in various .30 cal rifles i.e. the 30/06, 300 win and 300 ultra. Isn't the 180gr asking a lot of the 284 case capacity?

OK. Now then. I may be doing another build based on the 284. For conversation sake lets say it will be aroud the Tikka T3 action. If I want to come in at 9# field ready,in a B&C Medalist sporter stock, what barrel contour and length (fluted if necessary) would best suit the 284 win ? Can I add some length and still make weight while maintaining a tune? I would sure like to make some velocity gains without having to add weight,or go to 30" of length. What would be your ultimate 284 hunting rig based on the T3 Tikka? Factory magazine. 168gr upper end.

Thanks in advance,300Ultra.

Most people who have 30" barreled .284's and 180gr bullets are running them in F-Class competition, like myself. You can push a 180gr Berger to about 2850-2870fps with 30" barreled .284 Win., which is enough to be competitive out to 1000yds and yet remain cost effective (to go faster, you can step up to wildcat derivatives like the .284 Shehane but then there's a cost of dies, etc., or to the short magnums, but they go through barrels like it was going out of style).

The long barrel length is used to gain velocity for long range shooting. While the heavier bullets are for wind drift. But your talking about a deer rifle. The Sako/Tikka action is very smooth and accurate. Teamed with a 24" barrel, 9" twist and 140-160 bullets would make for a great hunting rifle. Talk with a barrel manufacturer, and they can lead you to a contour that would suit your weight request.

I believe lilja has a chart, to give you a weight for components, barrel contours etc.

I believe a 24 in. .284 would be an excellent deer/ elk rig. I am using a 7x57 and am comfortable with my loads with 160 gr. bullets. The extra velocity you will see are just icing on the cake.

My dedicated long range gun is a .260 with a 30" barrel. the velocity gains are worth the extra length, but on an antelope rifle clanking a barrel against anything is na impossible. :)

My .284, over 20 years old.Rem SA showing weight of gun and modified action. Extended bolt release , extended mag well. Throated to shoot A 140 gr Barnes Bullet . Case at 3.10 OAL. Lilja #2 or #3, 22" barrel .625 muzzle. 9 Twist.
This gun has over 12 Elk, one moose, countless deer, bear, etc. Longet shot 360 yds, but do not advocate that with a Mtn Gun. It was built for efficiency, packing and accuracy. One load, one style bullet. The Barnes 140 gr at 2900 FPS will do it all. They have all been 1 shot pass thru leaving A nice 1" hole, a pass thru Kills. One Elk made it 70 yds.
Just a cool little gun. I see no reason for anything else, thats why I built it, a joy to shoot.May give you some ideas on your perfect gun. Pete

300 Ultra--I just built a LR hunting rig, a .284, on a Tikka. This is the one I've been posting for various information. I'm sure I can help you get to where you want. Mine has a #5 Kreiger at 26". I'm at 2820 fps with 168 VLD's. I have room to push it some more. You should be able to make 2780- 2800 with a 24" bbl.

A #3 Lilja (1-1/4" shank) in a McMillan Sako Classic in edge fill (or even standard) with a VX3 in Talley Lightweights will get you where you want to be.

Here's my Tikka build in an A3. It's 10-1/2# with a 2# NightForce on it. You'd lose over a pound with the Leupold/Talley's.

Shoots very well. Yes, I'm using the "long" magazine that came with the 30-06 donor rifle. With the 168 VLD's touching the lands, there is .100 extra room in the magazine. Building the .284 with a "long" size magazine, and the Long Action bolt stop installed (in a Tikka) is the only way to go.

Did you look at the Sako Classic on McMillan's site? I'm using one for my next 7MM-08 Tikka build, with a #3 Lilja. Kinda shooting for the same thing you are. Sako Varmint is also a very nice stock. Here's one of my Tikka's in one.

Ultra, there ya go. Two different style guns. I had a Sako A2 308 back then that was to be my Mtn rifle. But you cant modify action like can be done on the Rem SA. Also nice to put a Jewell trigger in. A Mcmillan stock at first. to heavy, modified a Brown Precision, glass bedded action, mag well. A good forum. Pete

I hear that Pete! Dang I knew if I would ask you fellers I'd get the skinny on this I really appreciate it! If only that 284 of yours could talk Pete. What an impressive list of critters. Where do you hale from?

Aw man! You know how to push a fellas buttons. That is exactly what I'm talking about. I went to McMillans site and did in fact check out the Sako Classic. Sweet! That would have to wait until I see if I draw an elk tag for next fall. The Lilja site has a Tikka replacement contour barrel that I'm quite interested in. I might even start out at 26" to see how it feels. My Tikkas are running right around 7 1/2" lbs field ready,so a couple inches of barrel wouldn't kill the outcome. Especially in an Edge stock. I see that is a blued Tikka. Is it blueing or coated? My donor rifle is blued and I'm considering Duracoat for a finish. I like low maintenance.

Mine is not A custom but my BUTIFUL WIFE bought me A Browning A-Bolt Micro Hunter for Christmas in 284. I want to shoot Barnes 140 grain out of it and use H-4350 but cant seem to find much data. I see alot of people using RL-17. Any help on loads would be great. This is gonna make A nice lite weight hunting rig topped with A Leupold VX-II 4x12x40mm. I really like what I have read about the 284 just had A hard time getting one. Grice gun shop had A special run on the this gun and she was able to get her hands on one. I think she likes it just as much as me. She may be giving up her Kimber Select Grade in 257 Roberts for the Browning. She says the Kimber is to nice to carry. Any help with the 284 would be great. Thanks Mike

Mike, the Browning are nice rifles...and well balanced. I shoot 56.0 gr 4831SC now in my 284. The old Barnes bullets needed a jump of .050 to keep the pressure spike down. The new Triple shock is not the pure copper like the old bullets, so just touching the lands and play with your load.
I just got to the point that I sold my 338, 7mm Mag, 06, 308, 243 and built one gun. An ultimate Mtn Rifle. If I wanted to snipe A deer at 500 yds I had a custom 11# 30" Lilja , 6.5 Gibbs built on A 270 case for a longer neck, but thats another story. Pete
