Howdy and how is everyone? Good here thank you. Now,on to another 284 Q&A.
A year ago I had a good friend and BR buddy build me a LA M700 284 win hunting rig. I was in charge of ordering the barrel. Well,I screwed up. I ended up with the #4 Shilen and man is this rifle heavy. (10.25 lbs).
It was supposed to be a walking deer rifle. Not so much. Not at my age and state of disrepair. It IS however a wonderful "stand" hunting rig. Easily 3/8 MOA with 150gr Nosler BTs. We cut the barrel @ 24" for the sake of handiness. I'm cool with that. I don't think I would want anything over 26 on a deer rifle. Just my preference. She is throated for the 150/160gr bullets. Here are my questions.
I see lots of posts here and other places regarding the 284 win. I see there are a BUNCH of folks running them in barrels up to 30" ! Am I on the wrong page? I'm not saying that I would want a 30" hunting rig,but am I short changing myself that much at 24"? Maybe I would be better suited with a 260 or such at 24"
I also see that the 168 and 180gr bullets are king in the 284. I never considered the 180gr bullet well suited to anything under .30. It is my favorite bullet in various .30 cal rifles i.e. the 30/06, 300 win and 300 ultra. Isn't the 180gr asking a lot of the 284 case capacity?
OK. Now then. I may be doing another build based on the 284. For conversation sake lets say it will be aroud the Tikka T3 action. If I want to come in at 9# field ready,in a B&C Medalist sporter stock, what barrel contour and length (fluted if necessary) would best suit the 284 win ? Can I add some length and still make weight while maintaining a tune? I would sure like to make some velocity gains without having to add weight,or go to 30" of length. What would be your ultimate 284 hunting rig based on the T3 Tikka? Factory magazine. 168gr upper end.
Thanks in advance,300Ultra.
