.284 Build

Actually come to think of it. Some guys were getting some great speed from rl17. That might solve some issues with short barrel. I forgot about that. H4831sc and H4350 is all I have tried to date. but I had no need for rl17, I was getting to 2850 without pressure pretty easily.

thanks, I was thinking 2850 was in the so called sweet spot for these bullets in this caliber is why I was even opting for it. .

Birdog has a thread right now with a 28"brux running 2925 with R-17.

im looking at either a 26-28" 1-9 twist. What do you guys think on contour.

Im thinking like a Krieger Sporter #5 or 6 heavy bull sporter. Wouldn't want to go any heavier than a Match/target #7 light contour at 5.5 lbs

I'd like to go middle of the road, target/hunting. And I would like it to fit the muzzle brake pretty nice and not look out of proportion. I don't like the look of the screw on Gen 2's. It looks more tactical in appearance.

I want to go a APA break. Like a Gen 1 micro, or gen 1 little B%$##.
My STW has a 26" fluted Bartlein 3B, HS Precision stock, and Zeiss scope and weighs in pretty close to 12 lbs. A #4 adds 1/2 lb and a #3 is 1/2 less. If you are going to use it in the field, I would consider 26" as a max barrel length. Longer barrels will hit everything you walk by..........

A had good accuracy and velocity with RL17, but it was extremely temperature sensitive. Unless you have true velocity and dope for the hunting conditions, I wouldn't want to hunt LR with RL17. I had to redo my dope before every tactical match with RL17 due to dope changes, which were quite a bit beyond 800 yards. I am getting almost the same velocity from H4350 with better accuracy and very consistent velocities in my 284.

We just recently finished a build with a .284 win, Krieger 9 twist, RVC cut at 28 inches. Still running tests with it now, but it is in a HS Sporter stock, I have a manners TA on the way. Mainly a long range hunter. Even if you went up to the RVC I don't think it would be too bad for you. I am messing with the Seating depth on the 180 hybrids, but it is a shooter with the H4831SC. around 54.5 gr.

Understood. What was your velocity with each powder on average that you had shooting good.

I want to stick with the the 180's
With the 180 Hybrids, my nodes were at 51.6 w/H4350 at 2825, 54.8 w/H4831Sc at 2805, and in my last barrel the RL17 shot best w/51.1 at 2815. I had taken the RL17 up to 52.7 for a velocity of 2937 but I had pressure signs and it didn't group as well as the 2815 fps load.

couple updates for you guys and minor questions,

I felt a rem sender contour on my smiths gun and its boarderline heavy for me for walking... We decided to flute a #5 and shave 1/2lb on the contour and 1/2lb roughly on the flute.

I wanted to try a 1:8.5 twist as I will specifically be wanting to shoot the 180 bergers, in hunting or hybrid.

For now we can't find anything in kreiger, bartlein, or brux in the 8.5 twist except maybe one 8.5 in the rem sendero but have to verify Monday. Plenty of 9 twists.

I don't want to get on a wait list for the barrel, would I be better going the sendero in 8.5 twist for the extra .5lb. Or just go a #5 9 twist and not worry about it. Just thought the 8.5 was optimum but I am no expert and my smith says its a toss up...

I'll be doing my target shooting at 500ft, elk hunting once a year at 8000ft, and deer hunting once at 3500ft, so i'm all over the place but would rather it be setup right for 500ft. Im in Texas.

Also I wanted to try a defiance or surgeon, but so far we have struck out there to till making more calls on Monday. I want a long action in it. Anyone have any stores to call my smith may not know of? he is calling distributors etc, but is open for me to find one, buy it and ship in. same thing on the barrel.

I have been shooting the 180 hybrids out of a 1:9 twist for a few years at sea level and had no issues with it. I may try a 8.5 next time to see if I can observe an increase in BC at longer ranges. My measured BC is about 10% less then the published, which could be a result of marginal stability. Anyway, I would use a 1:9 with confidence. The only bullets I tried that it would not stabilize were the 195's and the 175 NLRABs.

You should be okay with a 9 twist. If your velocity is 2800fps and you are at 500ft then you are okay for stability as long as the temp doesn't get below 65 degrees. Even shooting on a cold day (35 deg) in Texas you'd only be losing ~3% of potential BC.

Bugholes.com has a Defiance Deviant Tactical Long Action in stock, standard bolt face and integral rail/lug, Seekins magwell cut (if that works for your build). Good guy to deal with.

Any input on keeping the saami neck of .320-322 for a 284 win build ? Using this setup for hunting but getting mixed reviews on the subject. Some saying will lose accuracy and lose longevity in brass life. Definitely want this rig to have some tolerance but not a the price of losing too much accuracy. It's not too late for me to order a reamer from PT&G with a tighter neck. I won't be turning necks, sorting brass, etc.

FWIW I'm running .0045 neck clearance on my .284 varmint gun without any issues, its one of the best shooting guns I've ever had built. I'm on my 4th firing of brass and they are still fine, no issues with cracking so far. I can't remember what loaded rounds of lapua unturned are. I'm thinking they are .315 but I'm not 100% on that. I personally would try to stick to .004-.005 for that set up if possible.

If you aren't planning on turning necks then you won't need a tighter chamber.

Others have taught me 0.004" diametrical clearance is ideal.

Norma brass completed ~0.316".
Lapua as stated above ~0.314-0.315"
Win brass is thinner: 0.31xx??

I've found in my own testing with (Sheldon N) ES/SD improves significantly by turning necks, I could not discern a difference in accuracy.

As I've been running a .284 for LR F-class for many years, a .284 elk rifle was a no-brainer and built it shortly after I realized how versatile the caliber is. 26" Broughton mid-weight, 9 twist, fluted, on a Pierce long action. Use my old LR brass (up to 15 firings) and also have a "stash" of new WW brass from their last production run. I put all my hunting rifles in the same stock, . McMillian Sako Varminter, just switch up the color blend on each. As someone said not too many critters out there that won't succumb to a 168VLD or Accu-Bond. The 162 A-Max is a great 3rd choice for lighter skinned/boned critters. Pretty much settled on RL-17 or H4350 and Tula LR primers. Have not been disappointed in many years of hunting. As usage is low for hunting brass I treat it just like my F-Class stuff, lightly turn the necks, med. neck tension. All the usually anal stuff folks do. Does help as I've thrown a NF on the guns and shot a few cleans at 600 with a pretty descent x-count. Have fun with the project and I'll try to upload a pic of mine. Eric in DL

Thanks for the experience and knowledge. I'll use it throughout this project. Doing this short action is causing me some stress not knowing what the end result will be. Too many guys pushing to go long action. I simply want the bottom metal with magazine feed. I have a LA 284 already in single feed but for a hunting gun, prefer a repeater. I shoot 180 s thru it without any issues of velocity limits or accuracy troubles. Just that there are some limitations with a SA.
