Ohio Hunters-Best Rifle Caliber for Deer

Not in a cartridge restricted state but have been slaying stuff with Savage 99 in 375 Win., this one is insanely accurate with the original 250gr loading, I morn it's demise.

Wow, I just read a little about this, & it seems like this cartridge is right up my alley. Plus being a bolt rifle.

Keep in mind that that is strictly an OH recommendation.

In other states, without the stupid “straight-wall cartridge “ restriction, I would, almost certainly, recommend something else.

I am looking for an "Ohio" specific rifle because I no longer enjoy shooting slugs out of my Rem 870 while hunting in Ohio.

Well, if you change your mind, I have a Savage 212 that I would dearly love to dump on someone. ;)

The 350 Legend, if you can find one, would be a great solution.

I’ll just put up with the freaking recoil of a sabot slug until I move back to TN.

Cannot knock the 350 L re the 357 Max save the Max does more for same spank...and, as noted, the 375 W is often just a bit much for a young shooter or range-work, while the Max is smooth and fun. Recoil also affect accuracy, which we often forget...and yes I know thread is dead horse time-wise. The Max is a real live 200 meter deer cartridge that will not shy new shooter and does a bit more than the heavily advertised 350 L. Not opinion.

I know things change fast, but a 20 gauge Encore rifled barrel, shooting 45.cal saboted bullets is accurate and deadly...and open sight fun, range or field.

45 colt and 45 long colt???? I thought that was the same.

And 38 special, really? In Maryland, we have you use a rifle that developed 1200 foot pounds. What can ya get a 38 special in a rifle, 300 foot pounds?
Not factory loadings, but some of the data from Elmer Keith and Skeeter Skelton for the .38 Special makes it go shoulder to shoulder with the .357 Magnum. Some of their load data exceeds factory .357 ammo specs.

Bought and used a 350 legend this year, son asked me to hunt with him, haven't deer hunted in 10 years. I have taken deer with bow, shot gun, and muzzle loader, and now a 350 legend.
Most shots around wooded areas of ohio are 75 to 100 yards. I don't shoot at running deer, the big doe i took this year was 130yds, double lung, went 40yds. And was done, used factory winchester 180gr. Soft point ammo , passed thru both sides. A well placed shot in the vitals is more important than anything, 350 legend is fun to shoot very little recoil in the 20" Ruger bolt gun i bought. Shooting off sticks at 200 hundred yards at 6" steel plate, i was able to hit it on every shot when setting up the rifle, good enough for deer hunting. Not a fan of recoil abuse, and this is coming from a person who shoots a 375 cheytac. Remember in a lot of ohio houses are pretty close by.

My favorite Model 7 Remington 45 Winchester Mag 4 bucks 4 shots and has the potential to be nicely suppressed. Favorite load 225 FTX around 2000 fps. with a load not to be used in a handgun.

If you hunt the woods, stick to a caliber with a flat enough trajectory and will deliver sufficient horsepower out to 150yds. 350 Legend, 450BM, etc.
