My new built 6ppc & .284win barrel change "budget rifle"...

Brisbane2011030.jpg

Brisbane2011032.jpg

Brisbane2011037.jpg

Brisbane2011029.jpg

Stolle Panda action, short, RB-RPRE, .473 bolt face.
Action was "mill finish", I hand polished it before glue in. (JB bore paste works, lol).
Rifle weighs approx. 10.35 lbs in 6ppc. Krieger 1:14, 21.5", .270 neck, .040 freebore.
Rifle weighs approx. 15.5 lbs in .284win (straight), including the 3" rear alum & 8" foreend attachment. Maddco barrel heavy taper 30", 1:9, .316 neck, .120 freebore.
Gunsmith David Kerr, in Australia.
Seb's stock, 3" wide parallel butt. The airbrush/paint work etc isn't good/not up to my standard, anyway. (it's because of the rush hours...I just finished the stock four days before the match, then ship it to Brisbane & had just arrived two days before the match. I glued the action in the evening & shot it the next day).
Custom/homemade alum trigger guard, and 1 pc piece base 15 moa scope rings. (not really necessary for mid long range but for the next 1,000 yds or F-class shoot that I would like to try in the near future).

Shown in the photos, in LG mode .284win.
The gun shot & tracked real well either in LV/HV mode 6ppc or in LG mode .284win. I love it!
I placed top 10 for the 2 guns at the Harry Madden c/ship in Brisbane just several days ago and took the silver medal for the 500m Flyshoot with the .284win on the next day, with this gun. So who says a barrel change rifle can't/doesn't work?

As comparison, stock length w/ 21.5" LV barrel. The foreend fixture adds 4" forward longer, i.e. for the .284 barrel.

PS: Carl, thanks you for the scope! I like it.

Greetings,
Should be titled "Show off your Barnard's". Here are my three Barnard P actioned prone rifles. All sport WTC scope rails, Right Sights and RPA rears. From left to right.
My Any/any LR rifle, red and black Bernosky (Cloward design) stock, Brux 30" hvy Palma contour 1-8.5" twist chambered in .284 Win. Center is my gorgeous english walnut Cloward stocked 6mmBR, 30" light Palma contour 1-7.5" twist Benchmark barrel. Last is my blue and black laminate Cloward stocked Palma rifle, .308 Win of course. 30" medium Palma contour 1-13" twist Krieger tight bore. I finished the laminates, with help from a buddy who owns an auto body shop who provided the clear coat. The blue and black stock was the first colored laminate Mr James Cloward roughed out. I heard about "blue dust" for months.
Take care,
John

This is the info I received before buying this rifle.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Noted Garand competition builder and accuracy specialist Don McCoy of Santee, CA, built this M1 for me in 2001. It is built on a selected Springfield receiver (1943 manufacture date), and has an Obermeyer 5R barrel with 1:10 twist. It is designed to shoot 190-grain bullets with exceptional accuracy out to 1000 yards.

This rifle has numerous custom accuracy features, including a lugged receiver, glass bedding with additional custom fabricated steel plate fittings that tie the receiver into the bedding with 3 bolts, ½-minute rear sight, reaming to ensure barrel & gas cylinder clearance as well as machining the end of the gas cylinder for stock clearance, and many more machined accuracy refinements. The forward hand grip is also glass bedded with attention taken to ensure complete clearance for the op-rod. The heavy stock is English walnut with a Fullerplast finish as only McCoy can do.

The 2-stage trigger is extraordinarily smooth and makes the rifle a joy to shoot. The rifle has approximately 40 rounds through it. It was function-fired by McCoy and later broken-in by myself using Tetra Gun followed by a dry patch every round for the first 10 rounds, every other for the next 10, and then 5 + 5 for the final 10 rounds. After the last 5 rounds it was immediately cleaned with Tetra Gun, dried, and a patch with Militec-1 lubricant was run down the bore while it was still hot. After returning from the range, the bore was cleaned with Sweets 7.62, followed by Tetra Gun. Lastly a patch of Militec-1 lubricant was run down the barrel. All cleaning & lubrication/protection was run from the breech to the muzzle.

This rifle is one of only three like it that McCoy has built in his long career building match Garands. His clients include some of the top High Power competitors and collectors in the country. I have a McCoy M1 in .308 with an Obermeyer 5R 1:11 barrel, which I fired in many High Power matches with great success.

A fine, accurate, and unique rifle from one of the outstanding M1 accuracy specialists at the peak of his career.

I also have video of McCoy in his shop going over the features of this rifle which I'm sending with the rifle.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

By "one of three" I didn't know what he meant until the video on the rifle arrived. It was made by McCoy explaining the exact constrution of this rifle by serial number. Beside every aspect of the rifle being bedded, its triple pillar bedded.

The other two of the three rifles have both achieved High Masters status at Camp Perry. Next year I hope to enter with this one.

Mr. Mcoy passed away at age 92 just 9 weeks after I received this rifle. I'm honored to have the rifle and the DVD he made on this particular rifle.

RIP, Don "Mac" McCoy

My Diamondback Switch Barrel - SN#C0063D

Hello friends & fellow shooters,

This goes to prove there's a lot of truth in the ole saying that one man's junk is another man's treasure. Some of you know me as a active buyer on 6mmBR's classifieds. I'm retired and enjoy shopping for deals on firearm, parts and components, both new and used. Over the last few years I have built two complete firearms from parts purchase off the forum and upgraded several others. I've been known to purchase a barrel or a stock even when I didn't have an immediate use or need for that particular item at the time because the price was right. I simply put it up and wait until I have a opportunity to use it. Sometimes it takes as long as a couple of years to assemble all the necessities to complete a build. My methods would never work for those in a hurry and wanting something new to shoot asap. This switch barrel was put together mostly from parts that I purchased from other forum members off of 6mmBR's classified ads. Or at least from contacts and vendors I was made aware of through the forum. One of the barrels was purchased as far back as March 2007.

The following is a list of components, members and or vendors that was involved one way or the other in providing parts or services regarding this build:

Polished Stiller Diamondback action (purchased from forum member foster - Feb 2010) - Jewell HVRTS-A (purchased from - Larry Scott) with top safety set at 3.2 ounces - McMillan MBR (purchased from forum member golfer2b2000 - Dec 2010) This stock was factory weighted when molded, stock alone weighs in at over 6.5lbs. I had it Hydro Dipped, selecting a Black Carbon Fiber Pattern which was then shot with auto clear coat. Had six "Buick Style Louver Slots" cut into the upper forearm to help with heat displacement. Also had to have the stock inleted for the DiamondBack, new S.S. pillars were installed and the action glass bedded. ( S&S Precision) Scope is a Sightron S III 10-50x60 with fine crosshair reticle. (Larry Scott - MAY 2010) Mounted in TPS Tactical Rings setting on a Stiller 20 moa Picatinny base. Complete rifle with scope weighs between 18 to 20 lbs depending on which barrel she's wearing. Our gun club is in the process of purchasing addition land that will allow us to put in a new range when completed we'll be able to shot out to 600 yds. I plan on being ready on day one. Now that it altogether it's time to see if she'll shoots as good as she looks !

So far the only barrel that I've shot was the 284 Win when the action was mounted in a light McMillan BR stock, it shot lights out. But at that time this rifle was a good 5 lbs lighter and it kicked like a mule, even with light bullets, so the stock change out was a necessity. I'm looking forward to load development and seeing how well it shoots later this winter as soon as hunting season is over. Having three barrels to play with it should keep me busy for a while.

Barrels:

1.) 30BR, 24" Krieger HV, 17tw, .330 nk, 0 free bore with Spider Web Finish chambered by S. & S. Precision - Don "Stick" Starks (purchased new Sept 2011)

2.) 284 Win, 30" Krieger Max Heavy Varmint Contour, 8.5tw, .311 match neck set up to shoot 180gr Bergers, Spider Web Finish chambered by S.G.& Y. Precision - Speedy Gonzalez - I purchased this chambered barrel new for 347.31 March 2007 when Speedy was closing up his shop down here in Texas. Folks this was just to good of a deal to pass up even though I didn't own a action that the barrel would fit at the time.

3.) 6.5x47 Lapua, 28" Krieger 1.250 dia Full Bull, 8tw, .293 no turn nk, .136 fb set up to shot 130gr Bergers, Polish Finish chambered by Richard King. (purchased for Mark Walker in Texas with only 400rds fired. Barrel will be head spaced by S. & S. Precision to fit the Diamondback.)

Regards
RJinTexas

Re: Official Gun Pix 'Pride & Joy' Thread

Something a little different - and another favorite of mine, my "bear rifle" a falling block .375 H&H Ruger Number One Tropical.

IMG_4402.jpg

IMG_4460.jpg

It's really quite a rifle. Capable of one MOA, easy to carry (about a pound lighter than Ruger's specs), surprisingly easy to shoot, particularly with the 260 gr Nosler Accubond at 2620 fps, which I have sighted-in at 200 yards. The bear fell to a single Nosler at a tad over 300 yards.

This rifle has a history, it went to Africa a couple of times with a prior owner and took cape buffalo, gemsbok and other African game. I don't need it, but doggone it's become a favorite.

Re: Official Gun Pix 'Pride & Joy' Thread

Elwood,

What does that thing weigh? Looks heavy :)

also, do you have to remove (or adjust) your cheek piece to remove the bolt?

Re: Official Gun Pix 'Pride & Joy' Thread

Hi Queen stick,

The rifle weighs 21 1/2 lbs and yes the cheek piece has to be removed to take the bolt out, it's not a great deal as the cheek piece is held in place by magnets, it's a one handed job.

Nadak, thank you.

Ian
