Octagonal barrel question

I’ve decided on my next project. I have a Remington long action that I want to do with a retro octagonal barrel in 30-06. Should it be indexed and chambered first, then cut to the octagonal or vice versa? Any body done one?

Get it cut octagonal the way you want it. Timing it once chambered isn't a big deal.

I agree with Wayne, but my 45-70 was chambered first. I made a mark on TDC and Karl Feldkamp cut the octagon.

Thanks Butch. I’m no machinest and usually leave it up to Bob. I’ve only read about barrels not being perfectly straight and having to be indexed at 6 or 12. Also not sure how an octagonal barrel would work in a lathe. Not having done it, I thought I’d ask.

Josh, I would go with what the feller that was doing the octagon wanted. An octagon has 8 flats.

Thanks Butch. Yup. 8 sides. I played with the idea of hexagonal but settled on the classic octagon.

What butch is saying is that since it has 8 sides thats pretty simple to put in a 4 jaw chuck.

They duplicated a Browning octagon barrel I sent in. It fit perfect when it was done and the finish was quite good. I hate polishing octagon barrels, lol.

Lothar Walther offer octagonal barrels. They are all 23.62 inches long.

Did it sound like Cookie ringing the dinner bell at the chuckwagon when you shot it Dusty?

No idea. I did it when remington came out with that vtr that had a triagular barrel.

I had thought about this 10 years ago. Look for an older Rem 700 adl with plain wood stock and blind mag. Then case harden coloring the receiver and old style purple blueing on barrel. Maybe even an Unertl scope. Chambered in 257 Roberts. It would make a unique speedgoat rifle and fun plinking at the range. I bet that it would draw attention and questions.
