Barrel Weight Question (Heavy Palma Barrel on Rem 700?)

Would a heavy palma contour barrel weigh too much for a Remington 700 long action. I am getting ready to build a long range prone rifle on a McMillan stock. I was planning between a 28-30" barrel length and chambering in 260 Remington. Found a heavy palma contour barrel in 8.5 twist, and want to make sure it will be ok before I buy it for the project. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks

If it's a 1.250" diameter shank, go for it. In my opinion though, the .260 Rem doesn't benefit much from a 28"-30" barrel. Also just my opinion, but a 26" barrel would be a good balance of weight, stiffness, and velocity in that caliber.

Do you really want to use a long action?

I used to shoot NRA matches, including the Any-Any when they had them. One of the things I remember about my first Any Rifle (a home made 7mm Rem Mag) was that it was a laser, but had a 29" #7 Shilen medium varmint barrel, and weighed in at 13.5 lbs. After shooting across the course, then the Any-Any prep period and 22 more rounds, the point of my left elbow would hurt enough to be a distraction. The long barrel made the rifle very muzzle heavy and was responsible for a lot of the discomfort. My match gun had a 26" target weight barrel, and was much more comfortable to belly shoot with.

I really like the .260 Rem cartridge, but it will give up some performance in poor conditions, particularly gusting wind.

Good luck, Tom

No sweat. I think I might have been preaching to the choir! I never shot a Palma, but all long range shooting requires wind doping skills. I like the boomers now, (.338 x .378, etc.) because I'm a lousy wind doper, and they keep me out of trouble. A 300gr Mkhp at 2800+ fps gets tiresome pretty quick, but is a top notch wind bucker. The old 7 mag was good too. With the 168gr Smkhp at 3100 fps it had half the drop and half the wind deflection of a 168gr .308 Win. I needed all the help I could get. Still do.

Have fun. Tom

That weight barrel is no problem at all for that action , just make sure that the bedding is done right with pillars.

If your going with a long action you might consider the regular 284 , you can get some bullet with a little better ballistics running about the same speed and that will realy help in the wind and the barrel life would be on par with the 260.

Don't get me wrong the 260 is a great round and a 140gr Berger at 2900fps works great out past 1000yds but i think that the 284 may have a step up on it.
