Nuclear Coyote Rifles

I once shot a rockchuck with a 243 Win and a 60 grain Sierra HP. Hit him solid in the exact middle of the chest from 200 yards. When found, he was layed out like the undertaker had set him up. Front paws crossed on his chest and all.

I had to move his paws to see the hole. No exit - darn those things are tough!

A day of calling using .224 caliber hotrods. 75s @ 3550-3650...

Plenty 'nuclear' for me! As an added bonus, I get to see the show, thanks to the lack of recoil from a small caliber. Nice to see 'em go "legs up" thru the scope...

IMHO, going any larger for coyotes is only killin' YOU more than them. But, whateva floats ya boat...

Sweet, as always Fredo, but Gene 66 and his gun aren't from this planet. They're from a different solar system and the coyotes on that planet can't be called in, and have to be shot at very long distances (ain't nothing for them there though). Sorry man, but you gotta give the guy the Nuclear Coyote King award. We probably better, 'cause I definitely don't want him shooting at me. Nannoo, nannoo.

In the .270 win. 4064 is another good powder in the .270 with the 90 gr. sierra hp.

In another development...

I'm going to experiment with a .375 200gn sierra flat point (designed for the 375winchester) and load it in a 375JRS. (375HH improved)

if the bullets will hold together when launched at 3400f/s, the coyote should not hold together. I'll post pics, assuming that the bullets make it to the target intact. :-)

Gotta love this thread. A 375/ 50 bmg. Allright. Thanks Ackleyman for the thoughts on the 270win. I've got a r700 in 270 I bought at the gunshow just waiting for that project. I just ordered the Sierra 90s

Just finished a experiment w/the 90's in my BAR. The 3 loads i tried w/W760 was a no go so far. I just went back to my IMR4350 load w/110 Vmaxes till the end of yote season here in IL.

Hi 370bc Sorry its taken me so long to reply. Tnx for the info on 760. Of the powders i have hodgon says H4895,Varget and H414 will get the best velocities, so I will try those first. Sierra says 4320 for their hunting load to I'll try that if the above dont work. My BAR is 7mmRM and I see sierra makes 100 grain hollowpoints in 7mm. I'll have to try that to. How's the accuracy of your BAR anyway? Good Shooting Thanks Hoz

My BAR has shot crazy groups as far as I can shoot. One day, at 200 yards, I shot 4 shots in one hole. The 5th one opened up to 3/8'' or a half. Anyway, it was crazy grouping. In general it is a MOA gun. On a good day Im plus/minus half MOA.
I lodade some sierra 100 grain for may bud's rem 700 that shot half MOA if the wind wasn't around.

Best hole I've left in a yote was with a 7-08 and 162A-Max from roughly 30yds. He trapsed rights in front of me while I was glassing across a valley during elk season. Took all the ribs on the exit side and nearly removed the front leg. Wish I had taken a picture.

This thread is old but I Luv it! I remember when it was first posted and ive gone back and read through it a few times since then.- good to hear from you - 162 gr 7mm- Im surprised it didnt do more damage. Proly not like a 375/50BMG though:):) Thanks-- I hope some more people will post about their "Nuclear coyote rifles"

LOL.. good stuff here. :)

I've worked in the past with the 110Vmax in 308. the hard part of this load is convincing enough H322 into the case. When wound up to nuclear pressure levels, this is *devastating* on chucks/PD's. Strong custom actions and Lapua brass advised. (brass balls helps as well) with a krieger 13.5 twist barrel and a 95 palma short throat chamber, accurate as all H*LL.

I actually quit using this gun/load on PD's because I couldn't see my hits. (even with a brake, or a suppressor) the impact signature was immense: sagebrush waving around, dust floating in the air (mushroom cloud shaped.....) on lots of occasions, I couldn't tell if I hit the PD or not. I'd walk downrange, (short range load....100-300y...due to the poor BC) and it would take me 5 minutes of searching to find evidence of a hit. bits and pieces all over.. a foot here, a leg there, sagebrush decorated like christmas trees...

I really like the 7mag/7STW idea. I have a very accurate 7mag, that is relatively lightweight at 12lbs. I'm going to order some 120G vmax from PV, and load them up with RL19/22.

now I have two good options, however the 7mag is a lot more "practical" ;-)

thx for the ideas/stories! :)
7mag, 140 ballistic tip. Exit hole is the whole off-side. Very instructive to a kid regarding gun safety

In with Fredo, my normal coyote gun is a 22/243. I have shot several coyotes with my 300um while long range hog hunting on a large field. I'm pushing 168gr bullets 3500 ft/s but doesn't kill them any more than a 75gr 22 bullet. Just more mess.

XTR,

I built a 22 EGSB about 20 years ago. I modified the design with an Ackley shoulder. I still have the reamers somewhere if you are interested...?
I shot a silver backed Jackal in RSA a few years ago with a 300 WM and Barnes 180gr factory ammunition. I was lucky, the taxidermist there had a spare hide to use to fill in the 6" round hole on the backside.
