NuBee Neck Turner

I think I'm over thinking this process. I weigh, measure and sort most every aspect of my reloading. Excel is my buddy. STD's, ES, Bell Curves etc. I bit the bullet and bought a Hornady Case Neck Turner yesterday. I think it is doing a good job.

But I can't think (in my old age) of any way to ask Excel if and when I've got a good Turning on a cases Neck. I have good calipers and a good micrometer on a stand........But

I know enough NOT TO cut into the cases neck. But.....it's probably a DA moment.

Is the micrometer equipped with a ball anvil? One is needed to accurately measure wall thickness. Excel can be used to record the measurements then analyze them to assess uniformity. Not being familiar with the Hornady neck turner, the expected variation in wall thickness is unknown.

Yes I have a ball anvil oh a high end mike. But I thickness in 4 points and compare pre turned with after turned. Then do a STDVP on the group and ES.

Just comes to me that maybe I'll try and Average the 4 measurement to arrive at a thickness. Ya that gave me an reduced thickness of .00135 and .00144 on my 2 test cases. That makes logic to me.

In order to know if neck wall thickness has been improved by neck turning, you need to know where you started, and where you ended. A ball mic is a good start, it averages the outside wall while pinpointing the inside wall. A double-ball mic pinpoints both inside and outside, which may result in TMI.

I'm not a fan of a neck turning tool that holds both ends of the case ridged like the Hornady tool does. I find hand holding the cutting tool works better so cases with none squire bases or banana long cases that will create a wobble in my hand keeping the neck well aligned with the mandrel for a good uniform cut.

^^^^ This
You Need a .0001" ball Mic
EMPHASIS ON "NEED",
forget the calipers, they wont work for this because the anvil cannot fit into an inside radius of a case neck to get an accurate measurement

A Shars will work just fine

Excel is my buddy. STD's,
If Excel, or anyone, is giving you STDs they're not your buddy.

Having said that, I measure near the case mouth, the middle, and near the shoulder - with a Hornady mic, because it has a tapered spindle so you can get closer to the shoulder.

Not sure what is gained by four measurements, but all it hurts is time.
