Neck turning ?

I have a expander mandrel that is .003 larger than my mandrel on my neck turner. When I try to turn my necks .001 the neck seems to be to tight and binds up. I chamfer the neck and use wax or oil. Can I put my turning mandrel in a drill and sand it down .001 ?

Link,

I don't know the answer to your question but just want to throw this out there FYI.

I also don't know the proper relationship dimensions for an expander mandrel vs a turning mandrel either but if I expand a case and then immediately turn it, it is not as tight on the turning mandrel as when I expand a batch and then turn the batch. This is due to spring back over time. It might work for you, if you are not already doing it that way. FWIW, I use Pumkin expanders and turners.

I'm no expert, but I'll chime in with what has worked for me over the years...NOTE: I also use Nielson's turner and mandrels...

I use Imperial wax inside the necks and run the case over the expander mandrel. I then lower the ram, rotate the case and then run the case over the mandrel again and pause for 5-8 seconds in the raised position before I lower the case again. This should help with some of the 'springback' tendency. Still has a snug fit over the turning mandrel(which it should), but not to the point of binding. I use FP10 on the outside of the neck when turning.

Good luck!

I should add new Lapua brass using wax. Do 1 at a time. The idea of running it over the mandrel several times sounds good I will try that next.

thanks
