First neck turning experience, start with GI brass?

Savageshooter86 – the problem with heat is the brass will expand and that would of course change the depth of your cut. If the heating is not uniform, the expansion will also not be uniform, and of course then your resultant neck thickness will not be uniform. It's really as simple as that.

It’s not a problem using a variable speed drill if you go slow, but even if you go slow but take a big bite, it’s going to heat up.

I will go check several more cases to see how much they vary. I checked 5 or so when I was turning them and they seemed to be reading the same but I am no expert at using this type of mic and have never measured neck thickness before. Helpful tip for the OP and any newbies to neck turning

You have the wright idea starting out with old brass . Here is a picture of my lath. its fast and easy to work with. it has all kinds of fine adjustments on it. once you get started turning will go fast, and the necks look smooth as glass. sorry I dint have any brass to show you wish i did. I have fired all that I have and they need cleaned.

It is definitely a good idea to start out with old and cheap brass. I had lots of problems when I first started and it was only with help from people on the board and lots of trial and error that things worked out for me.

Frankly this is good advice for reloading in general. I always cringe when someone new to reloading starts out with all the most expensive components and caliber...
