NSS "Savage Takeoff Barrel"

ASbobcat

Silver $$ Contributor
I recently purchased my first, and last Savage Takeoff Barrel from Northland Shooters Supply.

Attached you will see two images. These targets were shot at 50yds, so double group size to get MOA.

The image tagged "308 TO 6moa" was fired from a NSS Savage large shank 308 barrel. I called NSS to discuss the results ( 6moa) and they said the group was so large it couldn't possibly be due to their barrel. I disassembled the rifle and reassembled paying extra attention to barrel nut and action screw torques. The results were identical.
I then replaced the NSS barrel with the original 6Creedmoor barrel that came on the rifle in heavily used condition. The target tagged "Cabelas 1moa" was the result.

NSS quoted their return policy and denied any form of restitution. It may be that I am the only NSS customer to ever have this experience. I personally will never give them another try.

Might be interesting to take a peek down that barrel with a borescope.

NSS will not buy new take off barrels from an individual, and I couldn't trade a new take off as partial payment on a new Criterion or Shilen from NSS.

Given it's a new barrel, will Savage offer any warranty service on it?

Never understood why anyone would buy a savage takeoff barrel. People take them off for a reason. It is a crap shoot. You might get lucky and get a good one but...

Buy a shilen select match from NSS and you will be happy.

I believe something else besides the barrel is going on here. Too many other things to check to even list.

I'm a little confused, is it a new aftermarket barrel ? I wasn't aware Ns sold takeoff barrels , it's probably only good for testing theories on what makes a barrel inaccurate. Borescope it and see if it is new .
You didn't say what the fired cases look like ? Any strange marks or extraction issues .
Could it be a bullet weight /length issue , have you tried different bullet weights ? It might make a big difference .
Good luck .

What "Ggmac" said.
You need to
give more details ??

Look inside the barrel. Could be a flaw near the end and could be cut off and recrowned.
What he said. Barrel cut and crowning guy went on break and forgot where he was and didn't cut off bad end and just crowned it.

I've never seen a Savage factory barrel shoot half that bad at 100 yards. Even tho you bought it from NSS I'd call Savage. The squeaky wheel gets the grease. Explain to them your situation and see if they are willing to work with you.
I would also borescope it and go back over the whole setup one more time.

I did bore scope it. Heavily pitted most of length with noticeable copper fouling. This before I mounted it. Savage will not warranty any barrel sold by a third party.

Borescope did NOT look new. No case/extraction issues. 155gr fmj and 168gr SMK, same result.

If it was in that condition before you shot it, it had more than factory proof rounds down it. Will NSS apply the cost towards a new barrel? It would seem like a good business practice.

I would assume James would at least bore scope the new take off barrels he has before offering them for sale. Lot's here that just doesn't seem right, not that I'm disbelieving your experience. I've had nothing but good experiences with NSS and it's hard to fathom he'd sell a grape stake barrel, what with his reputation.
