NRA Range Development Services

My club purchased land several years ago and is now ready to start building a new 1000yd range. First we have too sell off the timber. But we could use guidance after that.

I've made 2 attempts to contact NRA Range Development division. Left voice mails and emailed. I got crickets.

You would think that the NRA would be happy to see new ranges being built, especially 1000yd ranges. They have this development division and talk a good game on their website, but I'm starting to believe it's all talk.

So the questioni is:
WHERE'S THE NRA WHEN YOU NEED THEM?
Hey is this central Alabama gun club?
I'd be interested in shooting with y'all any info appreciated.thx

Where in Texas?

We organized a fundraiser and our community came thru with the range donations the we needed. We are greatly indebted to them.

We're in the middle of nowhere Alabama. There is no community.
Just out of interest, how much money did you need?
Our very preliminary questimate is $175k to $250k.

As the Statewide Shooting Range Administrator for the Arizona Game and Fish Department, I provide technical assistance to new and old shooting ranges. Some things to think about are the EPA's guidelines for Lead at Outdoor Shooting Ranges, the Department of Energy's Range Design Criteria, the NRA's Range Source Book.

Don't give up on the NRA yet. They are working to bring back several programs. There has been some shifting in the staff (for the better). They actually have brought back the Range Development and Operations Conference, which I will be presenting at this year. It is going to be held in August at the NRA Headquarters. This conference is perfect for those wanting to build a new range.

PM me if you want more information or help.

It's human nature in many to pounce on what is perceived as a dead carcass and commence to feeding like vultures.

When I make multiple attempts to reach them, with no reply, they are dead.
I've also spoken to 2 other clubs going thru the same thing. They too received zero help.

If at all posable go to Matt's presentation or send several people if they can swing it. He is the God Father of Ben Avery in Phoenix and has probably forgot more than most people ever knew about 1K ranges. You won't be sorry. Good luck.

I’ve been hearing strong rumors of this “expansion” happening. Glad to see it finally coming true!

Aside from the legal aspects, the biggest thing I can tell you is, I hope you guys have a good board / range committee with a few of them understanding the requirements for long range shooting &/or matches. They can make or break the success of the expansion. The long range shooters of the club that I’m in (up in the b’ham area) are seeing this now!

Where are you shooting now?
We have a few good experienced LR shooters. They ARE the planning committee for this project.

As far as a club, I’m a member of Brock’s Gap that was once in Hoover, but now they’re developing a new range in Pell City. Things aren’t going good at all there for the long range competitive shooters. We had a monthly 500yd benchrest match at the old rage until the property was sold. I also shoot 600 & some 1000yd IBS & Freedom Benchrest matches when time allows.

Having an understanding committee is huge.

Right now we shoot F Class midrange at 300yds. It's the longest we can go. Thus the new range out to 1000yds.

We have a smaller crowd of 7 - 10 shooters per match. Getting the new range built is sure to increase that number. Your welcome to join us. Next match is 3/22. Start time is 0900.
Give me an email address. I'll add you to the mailing list

Possibly, at some point I can see 600 & 1000 benchrest, but I would really be surprised if it’s anytime this year. Things took longer to develop than they originally thought and their main focus has been on the pistol & 100yd bays while the plans for the 600, 1000 & 1400 yd ranges have DRASTICALLY changed. LOTS of work left on it!

Ok thanks a lot for info.atleast still sounds promising.

We're in Alabama. I don't think we have a state rep.
Friends of NRA is a 501c(3) corporation separate from the NRA but the fund raising events are overseen by NRA staff. They should be able to get you the info you seek.
