New range question

I don't understand why you wouldn't make it 800 if you were able to. If people think 800 is too easy with the current target? Use a 600y target at 800 then. If I were building a range, it would be made as far as possible while all the equipment is there to do it. Far easier to do it all in one shot (so to speak).

You can't just change the rules on target selection in an Approved or Sanctioned match.

I like 800 yards best. It's twice the MOA from 500 yards then almost the same increase to 1000 yards, Not twice as much, but almost the same about of MOA difference. Plus I shoot at 800 yards best. But it could just be our range and the topography. But we just shoot for fun. I can see in competition it could be mute. There is a big difference between 800 yards and 1000 yards for me though. Looks like the bottom line is money.

An 800 yard line will bring you no business other than some who just like to bang steel. You can't have any official long range matches or any Palma rifles. So there are no NRA or CMP matches you can hold to try to regain the money it will cost you to put it in and maintain it.

You "could" have NRA Long range F Class at 800. LR is 800 -1200, per NRA. But that was the point of my original post. Would you travel to an 800yd match? The majority says NO.

#13476 While not shooting the last match I spent much of the time watching what was hap- pening during the match and got to think- ing where we have come from and more so where we are going. One month from the June match I will turn 74 years old and am thinking that I do not want to do this forever. At any age, much less 74, we all know that there are no guarantees for a tomorrow. I think my health is good, but who knows. With that being said, if the Good Lord will grant continued good health, I would like to plan to finish the current year and hopefully shoot for five years after that. That puts the planned end at Reese Bottom being the end of the
2030 shooting season. If we can make it to 2030 that should give us a sixteen-year run which to me is pretty amazing. One of the main reasons for writing this is to make you aware of a time frame in case you are planning on building something or spending money on something with shooting at Reese Bottom in mind. I love
and respect all of you and thanks a mil-

Many of our members would be Long Range High Masters if a whole match was shot at 800 yards. With today’s F Class equipment, cleaning 800 with a high X count has become common place at our range. I’m sure that varies from range to range, but 800 is a fun target that boosts many an ego.

Bottom line is who pays your bills. If shooting matches pay your bills fine build it to suit your matches. If memberships to your club pay your bills do it as far as you can while you have all your equipment there. Our club brings in 85 Grand in membership fees it brings in 25 Grand in matches, sanction matches, PRS rentals and instructional rentals. If it wasn't for the thousand yard part of it we wouldn't have the 85 Grand in memberships.

TS,

What do the folks who shoot at HardRock or the Selma area have to say? 600 is considered a chip shot, and 800 pretty close to the same. Depending upon the wind at the site, doesn't get interesting until 900 or 1k. Blakley GA and River Bend folks might have some valid input as well.

Personally, if it didn't include 900 or 1k, wouldn't be interested. If it would require a contribution to make it happen, I could help by providing a small one.

I agree that 800 is just a long 600.
That's why I want to forego it.
We'll save some money on dirtwork and have more room for parking.

Central Alabama Gun Club has finally begun clearing land for a new range. We could go to 800yds.
I'm questioning doing an 800 yard.

Berms are planned at 200, 300 & 600. That will cover F Class midrange & XTC service rifle. But, I think most LONG range shooters would prefer 1000yd over 800yds.
I don't want the expense of adding an 800 distance if it won't be used.

So the question is:
Would you travel to an 800yd match verses a 1000yd match?
I would much prefer 1000 yd over 800 yd. You can run a real NRA long range match at 1000. People will drive for that.
Also, unless something has changed, there's no 1k range at Talladega. I think you would be the closest one to them.
800 yards just isn't a big draw so far as I can tell.
Good luck!

It really is gratifying knowing I can shoot a 2-21/2" group at 800 yards with a regular chassis rifle when doing the same at 1000 yards with the same rifle is not easy. But for being able to shoot good at 800 yards means a lot to some people if they don't care to compete but still want to be proficient at 800 yards and know what that means in the real world. I don't know if your range is just for competition, but I think many people might feel different about 800 yards with the equipment they have.

I would consider 1-300 and 600. I would skip the 800, and try to save for 1000.

It may be wise to see how many committed paying members you can draw with 1000 and make a determination from there, making a projection about that and rhe likely income from matches.

I already drive over 8 hours to attend a 1000 yard one day club matches. As stated earlier a 800 yard f class range is very easy and not likely to draw a large crowd. If you can build a 1000 yards range with at least 29-25 targets and have decent facilities you could put on big matches like V2 and the Texas State Rifle Association. If you want to go with more target lanes the club could also bid on getting the Nationals there.

it's meh
not real attractive, but, if the room is there, at least use it and offer it
it may be at least some challenge beyond 600 to allow some sort of local events
Maybe if there is a tie at 600
hold a tie braker at 800 lol
