Northern Idaho?

Realize Idaho has only two small blue areas--Moscow and Pocatello, and overall the state voted for trump by almost 70%.
Uh, Pocatello not so much. The 3 blue counties (Biden won) are Blaine (Sun Valley, Ketchum), Teton, and Latah (Moscow, U. Idaho). But Ada (greater Boise area) and Canyon counties are where the explosive growth is, and likely to drift purple in coming years. Consider Trump won Ada County by less than 1%. That should be sobering. Pocatello is also a college town (ISU) but also heavily Mormon, as is most of Southern Idaho. LDS Church is a bulwark against leftism. I believe there are more Mormons in Idaho than in Utah.

The voting map I looked at wasn't super detailed and didn't show county names, it just outlined the regions.

If Trump only won Ada county by 1%, but the state overall was almost 70% for Trump, then it will be a long while before Boise determines the state's voting.....

I'm in Pullman, WA. A small college town pocket of about 35k population. If you drive east to Moscow, ID (6 miles), it's another small college town pocket. Drive in any other direction, and it is rural farm country. Most reasonable political views are tolerated to an extent within the Palouse region.

Great fishing and hunting in both states. You will never taste a better trout than one caught in Rock Lake, WA. Rainbows and (if your lucky) German browns. All have salmon-colored flesh because their diet includes crayfish. Although the salmon/steelhead runs are declining on the Snake River, the confluence of Idaho's Clearwater and Washington's Snake is a gold mine if you have a boat and are willing to night fish (requires Idaho license).

In my experience, taxes are lower if you live in WA and work in WA. If you work in one state but live in the other, you get the worst of both worlds. Hunting is better in Idaho, but if you live in WA, you will pay a fortune to do so. I have lots more info for you, but I have a turkey on the smoker, and duty calls.

You really ought to go back and read my earlier posts about the history of Nevada flipping from red to blue. I lived through the entire process. There's also AZ and CO to review. It may take a decade or two, but if Idaho continues to be the state more people are moving to than any other, mark my words. The Ada County reference is only to point out ground zero. By far the most populous and fastest-growing city has almost flipped to blue. In 2016, Trump only got 48% in Ada (but McMullin and Johnson peeled off 11% and Trump still beat Hillary.)

In 1988 Bush got 63% in Ada County, in 1984 Reagan 72.5%, 1980 Reagan 64%, 1976 Ford 64%, 1972 Nixon 68%, 1968 Nixon 68% at the height of the Vietnam War.

Why would I need to read your earlier posts when I lived through what you are talking about in Oregon? The difference with Idaho is that many conservatives are fleeing blue states for Idaho where as with Oregon, most the the refugees are liberals. Oregon is just too easy a place for Californians to go. It has mild weather and easy access back to CA down I-5. Idaho is harder and seems to be becoming a conservative refuge in an otherwise liberal PNW.

That said, the truth is the entire country is going to sh-t, some places faster than others. This is not new news, as anyone who has read the back of the book knows. In Idaho I get to return to a more sane political environment, and I will bet your left nut that Idaho doesn't turn blue in my lifetime.

Land is cheaper in Idaho and Montana than California, I assume as with most people that would be some motivation as well as the quest for clean air.

This will never happen, but it's a nice thought.

A relevant curiosity not apparent to most folks in the country is that southern Idaho (the majority of the state) and even a large chunk of eastern Oregon (most of Malheur County) are in the Mountain Time Zone. Seems crazy considering both are Pacific Northwest states (and Idaho even has a Pacific seaport). Anyone care to guess (not research) how and why this anomaly came about?

My guess is that Northern Idaho went to Pacific Time because of Spokane and Spokane Valley being the major metro area. Northern Idaho is part of that metro area. Might be a similar deal with Malheur County and Boise. But that is just a guess.

Actually all of Idaho should (and would) have been in the Pacific time zone, as is Nevada and southern California (Reno is farther west than Los Angeles!) No, the backstory is about how and why the Mountain time zone border takes a sharp jog to the west to encompass southern Idaho and part of eastern Oregon.

I'm hoping it happens with Eastern WA first. We've been talking about building a wall at the top of the passes to check the papers of people traveling east. The papers would be their voting record. A lot of them would be turned back. :)
