Northern Idaho?

Still some on the ground south of Spokane and was indeed a mild day. Ran to Post Falls yesterday, nice to see sun instead of the gray cloud cover where we live, had hopes the sun might have peeked through, but no, still gray when I got home.

There are landlocked Chinook in Coeur d'Alene Lake, and big 'bows and Kamloops in Pend Oreille, but I fish this side of the border, and north, chasing smaller, but prime, rainbow in Lake Roosevelt. I consider it one of the top trout fisheries, if not THE top, in the state. I readily admit I'm biased. :)

Btw, there's also a Sportman's Warehouse in North Spokane.

Have been a WA resident since '67 when my dad got stationed at McCord. I, too, chose a career in the USAF and when I got orders to Fairchild in 1990, we knew this was where we would plant roots for the future. Sometimes hard to believe it's been 30 years.

I forget to mention that it's also nice to have an Air Force Base nearby again. I haven't updated my ID since I retired in 2007.

I rarely go to Bass Pro (aka Cabelas). I drive right on buy on my way to Black Sheep in CDA. The best reloading supply store in the area by far. Having said that, I was there last Saturday and all the common powders, primers and ammo were gone. Even the gun supply was low. Pretty much how it looks everywhere these days.

I'll have to check out Black Sheep, but I'll bet I'll still have to order most of my components. No one seems to have Bart's Hammers in stock, but Cabela's actually has two boxes of the same lot of 6 BR Norma brass--but little else.

That CDA area is nice and not only can you buy a new mattress about every other block it’s actually located at a reasonable distance from Missoula, Portland , Sacramento and Colorado where Clay shoots.

I can’t speak about the Idaho laws but in Montana the last three rifle transactions each took about fifteen minutes to complete and I was out the door WITH my new firearm. Can’t do that in Oregon

@PhilC, What was your function in the AF at Fairchild? How long were you stationed there?

I was the NCOIC of Communications Quality Control and when the METNAV supervisor left, I took over as NCOIC of that shop which was responsible for maintaining the Instrument Landing Systems, TACAN, airfield weather equipment, and the weather radar and was there Jan 90 - Mar 92. My entire career was in the same field.

I'd like to hear more about the Rainbows at Roosevelt. Where do you go and what do you use?
How about some pictures? ;)

These were from our week's stay last month. The native 'bow was FAT and close to 4lbs BUT in Lake Roosevelt native redband trout, or any rainbow trout, with an intact adipose fin cannot be retained so quick pic and sent back.

Still, we caught 20 in 3 days that came home and they will be going into the smoker next week. We generally fish Seven Bays to Keller Ferry area. Lots of great places there. We use trolling flies tipped with a chunk of crawler and I'm a speed troller, was running 3 - 3.5mph when there last month.

Very nice. Did a lot of trout fishing when I was young. It's one of the things I want to get back into in retirement. Retired about a year ago and still have not found the time. Maybe this spring.

I am able to do that in Oregon, mainly because my name is "Blaine" and not "Bob"....

In point of fact, not all of North Idaho gets much snow. Lewiston boasts the lowest elevation in the state, only 720 feet above sea level at the confluence of the Snake and Clearwater rivers. There is nearly the eastern extent of the Columbia Basin "Banana Belt". Lewiston is known as Idaho's "Seaport City" since the completion of the Lower Snake Dams project in 1974, bringing navigable slack water (and barge traffic) to Lewiston/Clarkston.
Here you can see the effect of the "Banana Belt" of the Columbia Basin, and the low finger of it where the Snake leaves Idaho (and the confluence with the Clearwater) at Lewiston. The Spokane Valley is also clear of snow on this day.

From a recent article in Forbes magazine:

A new study by Atlas Van Lines that tracked migration patterns throughout the country in 2019 found more Americans are moving to Idaho than any other state. The Gem State continued a pattern of drawing new residents, ranking as the survey’s inbound leader for the second time since 2017.

Is Idaho red yet? How long will it take for the blue tide to pollute?

A looong time. More than one person in the area has told me the libs do not usually stay past the first winter. However, I did meet a conservative who fled Western WA a few years ago. Whenever Is mention that we were from Oregon and just couldn't take it anymore, everyone understood. Realize Idaho has only two small blue areas--Moscow and Pocatello, and overall the state voted for trump by almost 70%.

What the heck did he buy? Must be some kind of tractor.

This thread is very disheartening. I grew up in Oregon on the Coast. Was hoping to move back when I retire in a couple of years. But Oregon has, well gone to hell with the Liberal Socialists. Very sad to see.

We moved from California to Washington for work and to escape the madness there. But sadly Washington is just as bad as California and Oregon. All three of these states have proven to cheat on the elections using those fixed counting machines donated by Hillary's foundation.

We had thought to move to Idaho, but in the last couple of elections, Boise has voted Blue not Red. Not that I have any desire to move to a city. But it isn't just in the city any more.

We looked at Texas, which in the cities has been invaded by the Liberal Socialists. There is still the country which to my understanding is mostly Red. But we worry that the heat may be more than we can handle.

We're running out of places to move to. So much for peaceful bliss in retirement.
Check out Alabama.
