Norma Tac22

I noticed on the Norma link that Butch posted, there showing a new match ammo. Is this really new? It looks like the match is the same velocity as the TAC.

Is one more desirable?
I don’t know, but I have tried the Black Box and it worked well, at least the lot I got. I have heard from a couple people the new red box isn’t as good, but people say that about the new versions of a lot of things.

I bought a few bricks of the red box stuff and it does not shoot as well as the original black box. Quite a few flyers. The old white box match version never shot as well as the regular TAC-22, at least for me.

A little over three years ago I decided to take up Rim-Fire Bench Rest just for fun. I had a Ruger 1022 with the 0.90 bull barrel, a Marlin magazine feed rifle and my wife's Ruger American RF. All three had low priced 3X9 1" scopes mounted, 2 Simmons and one old Tasco. Using bulk box Winchester, Remington, and Federal ammunition, I was unimpressed with any combination of amo and rifle. I was able to score a brick of both Norma Match and Tac22 at the local Sportsman's Warehouse and noted a very significant improvement in accuracy at 50 yards. I was using a Sinclair F-TR bi-pod and a rear bag. With the most accurate of my three rifles, the RARF I was able to get the more than occasional sub 1" group and a very few down in the 0.6-0.7" range. I really couldn't tell much difference in average group size between the two types of Norma rounds. It was a lot of fun and so I sold the 1022 and Marlin and scored a Walther KKM on Gun Broker for $800. I mounted one of Butch"s 3" bag riders mounted on a Pic. rail and started using my F-Open front rest. With a Weaver T-36 the improvement in 50 yard accuracy with either Norma was very significant and now the Norma Match was clearly more consistently accurate. Now began my quest for still better accuracy. The various SK's were not any better until I tried SK Rifle Match and now sub 0.5" groups were happening with some regularity. Lapua Midas+ and Center-X also were about the same. Eley 10X was a disapointment in my rifle but I finally found the magic round, RWS R-50. If I don't get a one hole group with the Walther and
R-50 it's my fault or terrible conditions. In my opinion Norma Match is comparable to the less expensive grades of SK and Eley and slightly better than Tac in my rifles. Your rifle may tell you a different story. LISTEN TO YOUR RIFLE.

Exceptionally consistent. Until the fourth or fifth shot.
Weight sorting does not help. Neither does rim thickness.
Otherwise I would love it..........

Everyone I talk to at the shops and the manufacturer all say that the new red box is the exact same as the black box. My rifles disagree. The b14r shoots the new stuff pretty well, but my 3 CZs definitely shoot worse with a lot more flyers and looser groups. The new stuff isn't as greasy as the old and definitely not the same. It is now very hard to find old stock and most dealers will have the new.

I have an old (1936?) -06 .22short/long /LR winchester pump action ; what would you recommend i shoot with for target and small game/game birds ( eg duiker and geese)? eg cci .22 LR 40 gr standard ; norma 1080 fps -40 gr ; winchester X 40gr ? eley 40 gr ? kindly advise please ; Many thanks !

I've had mediocre results with red box TAC-22 in most of my custom-barreled Vudoo rifles, most of which I chambered with an EPS reamer. My two remaining CZ457s both have Shilen select match ratchet barrels, also chambered with the same EPS reamer, and so perform about the same as the Vudoos. But on average, my two Anschutz 54 sporters (one an older Savage-Anschutz made in 1967, the other a much newer 1712) shoot the Norma ammo a bit better than any of my other 22RF rifles. When I bought a case of TAC-22 a couple of years ago, it was priced at $3.49/box, and at that price, I feel it was well worth it.

What do you consider 'decent' for Tac-22 performance? In no wind it will shoot right at an inch for 5 shots at 100. Sometimes I will get some .75 groups. I just have a 1416 sporter bbl. Love it!

I have a 1416 that does well with the black box also. I'm not good at wind reading, but I get some informal groups around an inch at 100. But they often include a flyer - I ask myself if it's me or the ammo?

Ammo! seems like the flyers I occasionally get are way off base, ie more than just caused by a puff of wind.

I had 3 boxes of the older black box given to me and it shot pretty good 10 shot groups at 100 for the price. Bought a case of black box and it was much worse with many fliers. I would not compete with it but for the price and the proper intended use it is fine.

As per all rimfire the lot numbers make the biggest differences but for the price point you kind of know what you are in for.
