No Pressure Release Hole in Action

I noticed this Rem 40X Action has no pressure release hole when the Rem 700 does has one. Is this common for the 40X not to have one?

I think the release hole should be there to protect the shooter and the action in the event of a catastrophic failure due to excessive pressure. Why would Remy decide not to have these in their single shot actions, any thoughts on that?

Not sure if it was Remington or not but I remember something being said not too long ago about a recall on rifles that "didn't" have the pressure release hole drilled in some actions? The fix was to drill the hole. Someone correct me if I'am wrong.

NorCalMikie, I also think there should be a hole so I'm leaning towards fixing this before there is a problem. Thank you!

As far as the thread being in the "classified section"? Didn't bother me a bit! ;) ;D

One thing to keep in mind is the action metal can be pretty hard so plan ahead when you start drilling.

Yea I know. It was an accidental discharge I’m guilty. That happens once in a while. Glad you were not injured. I expect those actions are pretty hard. I’ll probably try a carbide tip drill and copy the Rem 700 for a pattern. I checked the XP100 and it does have a release hole. :o

Roger that. I did enlarge the scope base holes to 8-40 and the metal cut just fine. so I'm thinking/hopeful this hole drills the same. Thanks for all the good advice! E

I dp not think such a small hole would do much to channel gases in case of a blow.

On the contrary, it would constitute a startin gpoint for a break in this crucial area.

Preacher, on a different topic. Have you ever installed a bolt release on the Rem 700/40X? I have another post asking for lessons learned on this topic. Just wanting to hear from someone that has done it. Thanks.

I've never figured out how that hot gas explosion coming out of the 3 rings of steel are going to make a 90degree turn and go thru a smaller hole than going out the raceway where theres way less restriction. a hall action is the only design ive ever seen that would channel that gas out the side.

Per Stuart Otteson's book Benchrest Actions & Triggers, although Mike Walker designed the Model 700, the receiver ring gas port was designed by the marketing department. Walker considered it a nonfunctional hole and eliminated it on 40XBR receivers. The plant occasionally overlooked that detail and some 40XBR receivers have the gas port.
