Rem 40X Action Threads

What are the threads in a Rem 40X action. Are they the same as a 700? Is the 40X action better than a 700? Has anybody made a Remage out of a 40X?

Bill

They are the same. I have two remage on 700s, and know someone who did one on a 40x.

They're supposed to be better dimensionally than a 700, but from what I've read, it depends on luck of the draw still.

I got an older 40x action that I used for across the course, needed clip slot and receiver holes for the rear sight. Shot sub moa without any work, fixing to sell it, just sitting there and need the space. I could have used a 700 for same and bought a clip adapter and receiver with clamp on sight without needing receiver holes.

Same 1 1/16 - 16 iirc.
The repeater 40Xs have the rep of being more desirable. Stiffer? If same exact profile, kinda doubt it. Single shot stiffer, naturally.
Maybe more mfrg care on tolerances for the X.

I can give you first hand info, as in years past I have worked with several 40X’s. Back when I first started in Benchrest, shooters were still using the 40X and the XP 100 as a platform for a Benchrest Rifle.

The bolt fit, threads, locking lug engagement, and action face are no better or worse than a regular 700 as far as trueness is concerned.

For all general purposes, a 40X Repeater Action is simply a 700 with a different name stamped on the side.

No difference at all. Barrels from a 7, 600, 700, and 40X will all fit with just a headspace check. Lettering might not be in the right place.

The actions that Mike Walker personally supervised the build of in the very beginning stages of the 40X may have been very different, some here would have first hand knowledge of this as they trued a bunch of them I am sure...40x BR, and the BBR. I think that the bean counters killed off a lot of good things that could have happened in terms of the direction that the company was going to take at this time.

Some of you know Jimmy Stekl. Jimmy said and I've heard elsewhere that they just picked a few receivers off the line before they were roll stamped. Those were the 40X. I had a rare 40X that was given to me by Red Cornelison to carry to the Crawfish Shoot in the middle 90s to give to another shooter, Maybe Frank Wilson. It was a SA rt bolt left port single shot. Red said only 2 or 3 were built. Kinda like the internal adjust 24X scopes that they made. 3 and 1 prototype. I have one and the prototype.
