It's that initial firing that ruins a good case if not done right. Not necessarily. Just set the should back relative to the fired case size.

Is the UK the only country still having a Proof House? It was understandable in days of unknown metal quality and hundreds of gunsmiths - but surely, now that the British gun industry is non-existent,, well, almost - why are they still bothering? All of the firearms that they are testing are widely available in the rest of the world. Seems another bit of government that should be abolished .I always use both gauges.a new barrel or chamber set back.i have to submit the rifle for proof.London or Birmingham proof house.they check head space with both gauges before they test fire.if it isn't correct they will fail it..no proof stamp and without it I can't return it back to customer or sell it.thats the law in the UK.its also your insurance against someone trying to sue you for a injury.it wouldn't look good in a court of law with no proof stamp and the prosecution closing the bolt on a No Go gauge.
Yes, London and Birmingham are the proof house's here which are in use.Is the UK the only country still having a Proof House? That’s what I do.Scotch tape is about .002, so for a home made NOGO two layers should be about right.
