No go gauge alternative

I have bought a prefit barrel for my savage model 12 from urban rifleman. I also picked up a recoil lug, barrel nut and a go gauge. I have seen a few people put scotch tape on the back of the go gauge for their no go gauge on the youtube. Is it ok to use that method ? First barrel swap ever so I might have a couple more questions as time draws near. Thanks guys

Yes, the clear packing tape I use is .003 thick, I put two layers on the case head of a go gauge to get a no go.

Way back in the days of olde we didn't have any gauges. We would use a new case for setting the headspace. They all worked. Never had any blow up.
If you are going to wildcat you will still be doing this. Worked then and works now as long as you reload for your own chamber and make sure the bolt clearance is correct.

I always use both gauges.a new barrel or chamber set back.i have to submit the rifle for proof.London or Birmingham proof house.they check head space with both gauges before they test fire.if it isn't correct they will fail it..no proof stamp and without it I can't return it back to customer or sell it.thats the law in the UK.its also your insurance against someone trying to sue you for a injury.it wouldn't look good in a court of law with no proof stamp and the prosecution closing the bolt on a No Go gauge.

Since it's your first...
Best to have an action wrench as well as the barrel vise, though it's not mandatory.
The receiver will want to spin as you torque the nut. If that happens as you tighten the nut, you'll be increasing your headspace.
What Dusty said above- make sure your bolt is stripped, this is a "feel" thing. Ideally, the bolt handle will drop freely with just a smidge of resistance at the very bottom for zero headspace. Don't get hung up on it though like us perfectionists- matters not if it's zero, or plus .003 or .004, won't affect factory ammo if that's what you shoot, and if you handload you just adjust your shoulder bump accordingly.

I have the barrel nut wrench. Rigged up a clamp out of a 2x4 with a hole drilled through it and split in half for the bench vise. I didn’t think I was going to get it broke loose. I will not be going that route installing the new barrel
