Nightforce Competition 15X-55X

I received one of the new Competition NF scopes today for evaluation. It is a very handsome scope and I hope to run some tests on it tomorrow. I mounted it on a Marsh 6mm PPC and plan to test the POI by "shooting the square". In this test, I fire the first shot at 100 yards; then, I adjust up 48 clicks (6 inches), and fire the second shot. Next, I move the adjustments 48 clicks right and fire, followed by 48 down and a fourth shot. The final adjustment is 48 clicks left and the final shot shot should be close to the first...if the tracking is perfect. Next, I will shoot the scope at 15X, 25x, 35X, 45X, and 55X to see if there is any change in impact with a change in power. Scopes that excel in these tests are rare. Good shooting..... James

After the intial test on the 6PPC, I will mount the scope on my BAT/Dasher and use it in competiton at 600 yards. I will then have an idea about the image clarity. This new scope has ED lens so I expect great things from it. James

I'll be waiting for the report! This scope has really caught my attention. James, thanks again for all the the products you help keep us up on and the informative information.

I risked frostbite and shot the new scope on two different rifles. On the 6 PPC, I shot "the square", i.e. I fired one shot, moved the adjustments over 48 clicks (nominal 6 "), fired a second shot with the same aim point; moved over 48 clicks, fired a third shot; moved down 48 clicks, fired a 4th; and finally back 48 clicks. The last shot cut the hole of the first, therefore this scope passed with flying colors. (see photo). After this I shot five shots....one at each of the following powers: 15X, 25X, 35X, 45X and 55X. There was some variation but not outside of the normal grouping ability of shooting at one power. Next, I mounted the scope on my BAT/6mm Dasher with 28: Brux barrel. After finding the zero, I fired three, 3-shot groups at 100 yards. The first was a vertical .417" and the next two groups were very good...a 0.099" and a 0.160. The load was 32.5 gr. of Varget pushing a 105 gr. Berger Hybrid.

James,

Thank you for taking the risk of getting frostbite on your sniffer and digits... ;)

In your opinion, how was the clarity of this scope????

Phil.

Phil, the clarity was great considering the mirage present. I did most of the shooting at 55X and did not have to turn down the power to see the target clearly. On March 16th, I will shoot it in a 600 yard match. James

While I have not had one of the new NF Competition scope on a rifle I have looked through one. I have one of the 100mm Unertl Team Spotting scopes. It had the 32x eyepiece in it so the Nightforce guys dialed the New Competition scope back to 32x for an equal test. Several 100 yards away we decide to focus in on the small aluminum plaque on the side of an electrical transformer. The truth is that the new scope gets the nod. Yes, it is a little clearer & sharper than the Team scope. Hard to believe but all 5 folks that looked through both scopes thought that the NF was better. Each person looked through both without hearing the opinions of the others. It was a pretty big Win in my book.

Thanks James,

That 52mm objective lense has me concerned, especially after the shadows the march has with the smaller obj. lens.

Phil.

I did not weigh the scope, but the manuel lsts it as 27.8 ounces. With the barrel on the Marsh rifle, it will not make weight for the 10.5 class (10.8#). On the long range Dasher it is plenty light for the LG class. Here it is on my BAT/Brux 6mm Dasher. Good shooting....James

James,
Who sells those base adapters that your rings are clamped to? Good info on the scope.
Boyd
PS For those that might have missed it, there was a recent story on the bulletin about Walt Berger winning at Visalia. He was shooting one in both 10 1/2# and 13 1/2# classes. He offered me a brief peek between matches, and it looked good, but that was hardly an evaluation. A 20 1/4"(for LV) barrel, light fill in the stock, and one of the Marsh Saguaro actions all helped him make weight.

Boyd, those riser mounts that convert the Davidson bases to Weaver type are from BKL Technologies (P.O. Box 2478 Fort Worth, TX 76113 or Ph: 877-255-2001 or E-mail ORDERS@BKLTECH.COM). They work just as advertised. John Mangus of Columbus, OH first told me about them. Good shooting...James
