Nice early spring day shooting.

It was almost +10*C today and sunny so my girlfriend and I went shooting. Just thought I would share some pics.

I’m in the process of breaking in my Savage model 12 LRPV in .204 ruger.

About a 15 minute snowmobile ride from our houses we have our own private 900 yard range. With 0 elevation change. (it’s a lake)

And I got to play with my new toy. My girlfriend Siiri bought me a Kestrel 3500 weather station. ;D

Here are our guns. First is Siiris savage 17HMR.

Here is my savage 17HMR.

And this is my new Savage model 12. The rings I bought ended up being way to high. I didnt realize how tall a fairral base was. I ordered rings that are 1/2" lower. So for now I used rubber bands and a towel to make the stock taller.

Today ended up being a very good day. I decided to try shooting 200 yards to see how my 204 would group. I ended up shocking myself. I shot a 0.231 3 shot group. That is with Hornady 32 gr factory ammo. Can’t complain with those results!!

0.435-0.204=0.231 ..giver take :)

Siiris 17HMR has a Vortex Crossfire 6-24X50 (shes borrowing the scope off my 270)

My 17HMR has a Vortex viper 3-9X40

My 204 ruger has a Vortex Viper 6.5-20X50 on Burris extreme tactical rings. With a Ken Farral 20 MOA base.

Thanks for reading.

Thanks Wayne. I'm just amazed by that little 204, and I’m happy with my self. I’ve been reading a lot on how to shoot better groups. I don’t shoot if I’m not comfortable behind the gun. Once I get comfy I can hold a lot more steady. And it shows in my groups.

KOna,
Absolutely, I preach that philosophy but don't always practice it myself,... and your right it does show up in your groups ;)

Lakehead............brings back memories of my 16 years in Sudbury - bright sun, spruce and snow. Snowmobiled many times into the country north of Sudbury for ice fishing.

Down here on Lake Erie now where Winters tend to be gray but a lot milder. Snow has melted enough lately so I can once again drive my car into the 300 metre range instead of lugging my gear over the snow drifts.

We are getting your +10C temps today and tomorrow. Will be fireforming a new batch of Rem 7x57 brass into 6.5x57 Ack Imp using the COW method. Getting ready for the 1000 yd F Class season in April.

Don`t ride over any thin ice.

How is the Kestrel? I'm thinking about buying one.

Thanks,

So far its been awesome. I haven't used it alot yet. But it does help. Now I can put a value to what the wind is. Before I was always holding over to much for wind.

Thanks. I think we are going shooting tomorrow too. But its suspost to be -10*C so its not going to be as nice as last time. But I made a gong and I need to try it out! Also going to test some loads in the model 12

My buddy and I made up gongs last year for the first time only got to shoot them out to 880 yards but it was still fun. Can't wait to break them back out!

The longest Ive shot steel was at 300 with my 17HMR but its really hit or miss at that distance. Then I got a Savage model 111 in .270win and 300 wasnt that bad. Since then I got my new 204 and ill see what I can do with it this weekend. I'll be really happy if I can get past 300. We will find out tomorrow. I dont think ill have any major problems tho.

As long as you read the wind right and have the right amount of clicks or hold off I don't think you'll have any trouble going past 300 yards with your 204! Good luck let us know how it does

The gong was pretty lame. I used a cast iron plate. Its from the train tracks. Supports the rail on the tie. They took up a section of track around my area so we have 1000's of 12" by 9" plates. They have 4 holes but they are easy enough to weld up.

I guess you don't get a really ding sound when you hit the cast iron. Its easy to see where you hit tho. I need to find a steel plate and see how that works.

The legs I made work awesome tho. I'll get a pic next time in out with my camera.

Thanks for sharing! Those Savage's just plain shoot. Looks like an awesome day. Makes me look forward to spring shooting here in MN.
