NIB Gun with damaged crown

Looking for some advice.

For xmas, my (incredible) wife gave me a brand new rifle in 6.5 prc. I've been shooting/reloading AR-15s but this is my first real bolt-action.

Upon borescoping it, the crown seems messed up...but I'm not sure how big a deal to make out of it. For transparency, all I've done with this gun is unboxed it (ie no hap-hazard cleaning). I just e-mailed the manufacturer today to see what they say. But was curious what I should be pushing them to do here (new rifle, recrown the barrel)?

Have you pushed any clean patches through it yet?? Just curious, because I have found a very interesting collection of "junk" and "gunk" in new and supposedly test fired factory barrels. But that crown on that one you have is a show stopper. JMHO.

Let us know how it goes when you call the factory. WD

I've got a paid shipping label from their customer support, so fingers crossed. I generally like to give folks the benefit of the doubt...so hopefully they'll make good by this. The "delay" may not be that big of deal as I can't get serious with this gun until I the brass I backordered arrives...which is likely months out.

They id suggest that I shoot it first...I may/may not given how bad it looks.

That barrel is cr-p.
But here is your problem. They mght hit you with the old “it’s within manufacturing tolerance” line.
YUP,.. See the above, 2 Posts
Clean Lightly and Test shoot,.. FIRST !
And my best advice from, a former, Gun Dealer / Gunsmith ( with 25 Years, experience ) that HAS, sent in, many "problem" Guns, to Manufacturers.

The easiest thing to do first is clean the barrel and re evaluate. I have seen things through the bore scope I swore was a bad barrel miraculously be gone after being cleaned. It may or may not but for 5-10 minutes of your time..
Agree with,.. THIS ^^^
I Clean, Scope and TEST Shoot, ALL my New Rifles, EVEN Tikka's ,. First !
Before doing, any,.. "Modifications"
And don't, Loctite, Bases / Rings, down,.. YET

There are pros and cons to this avenue.

Sometimes, but not always, a gun takes a standard load and shows you its potential. That may have always been dumb luck, but it seemed to pan out in my life.

Other times, a gun that will eventually shoot great doesn't like the first thing you try, and then there are those unfortunate bbls that suck forever and make a great tomato stake...

The problem with your situation, is how much resource and time will be risked to find out?

If you were talking about a gun where ammo was cheap and plentiful, I would say why not give it a try... but I haven't seen factory ammo for one of these yet, even though in theory it exists somewhere...

Now with a design that has been around long enough to have some known standards that always perform at least decent, that situation is one level of risk. But in your situation where the design is very young, and ammo is hard to find at all, you may end up tipping the scales in favor of a punt and ship it off while you wait for your brass and components to eventually arrive.

I'm just happy to hear the opening CS dialogue was good and they didn't try to spin it into being your tough luck.

Send this back to the manufacturer, otherwise, you will ALWAYS doubt the ability of this barrel.
