Next Gun Suggestions

I shoot prairie dogs each year and am looking to add to my collection.. I started with a Rem 700 in 223, and then a Savage Model 12 in 22-250, then Remington 700 in 243, then Savage Model 12 in 6BR. then a Remington 700 ( trued action Jewell trigger in 6BR.. So what's next? Most shots are +175 yds to 350 yds and even out to 500 yds ( rare).. So what would be next? Thanks.....

I have done my fair share of Prairie Dog hunting and have always thought the 22-250 was about as good as it got. Having watched this thread, methinks that the 22 Dasher, that Stacy mentioned, might just be the ticket! Flat shooting enough, more than just "accurate" and you can really ZIP a 55gr Ballistic Tip out that muzzle, causing spectacular visual effects!! Very intriguing indeed!

Considering what you already have a .20 VarTarg would be a perfect addition. You will start to leave other guns in their case or even at home after you get one. I offer a money back guarantee with that advice.

22 ppc is my favorite in my arsenal. I use 222,223, 6br's with 14 twist, 6br's with 8 twist,6 dasher's and 20 ppc. Just load 220 Russian Lapua brass and shoot it. I get 50 v-max going 3700,mild recoil with no brake needed on a HV barrel, Very accurate and don't use much powder. JUST HOLD ON HAIR

Not to spoil your fun, but you've got a lot of nice guns that fit the "175-350 yard prairie dog" purpose. Even among your current guns, there's a lot of duplication/overlap.

It's always fun and exciting to buy a new gun, but I don't think you need one.

Thanks to all the reply's.. looks as though 1 gun won't do it.. I'm wanting to build a rifle and one criteria is I use a Choate Sniper stock. ( they fit me well and are heavy which reduces felt recoil) The guy I shoot with suggested a 22 BR.. ( he has two) I think the 204 with the 39 gr would also be a nasty combo..

A true custom in a 22 BR or 20 Vartarg. The guys I shoot with have killed Prairie dogs out to 900 yards with a 20 Vartarg. The 22 Dasher would also be good. But if its windy the 6 Dasher with a 105 class bullet would be tough to beat all the way to 1000. Matt

Being an active rat shooter now since 1968, and having about every caliber in the safe that known to man, my favorite rat rifle now for the past four years is the 20 VarTarg. Being able to reach out to 500 yards and only burn 18~grs of powder with accuracy that rivals any BR rig, I can't imagine what else anybody would need. Besides, being able to see every hit through the scope is what we all want anyway....right?

Like a previous poster stated, that advice comes with a money-back guarantee. I've NEVER met a guy who built a 20VT and did NOT love it. I've got rifles in the safe that I just HAD to build that now sit there when rat season rolls around, as the 204R and the 20VT get all the action....mostly the 20VT.

Oh, and for your convenience, Cooper chambers the 20VT in their M21; imagine that! :)
