newbie's got a couple F-T/R questions

Hey hey y'all

I'm a total nube to the comp shooting scene with plans of building my own F-T/R rig and joining the party. I've read the rules, searched the archives, and watched lots of vids but I still haven't resolved a few questions. I'm a devoted DIY kind of guy with a small machine shop and I want to design/fabricate as much as I can so I thought I should ask a few questions to be sure that I design tools that are legal. Top of the list is whether or not bipods with micro adjustments for elevation and windage are allowed in F-T/R. The Phoenix bipod and similar have elevation adjustments but I haven't seen anyone adjusting them between shots so I'm wondering if it's because it's not allowed or if it's because of the difficulty of reaching that adjuster from behind the gun. Presumably they're making adjustments at the rear bag since I don't see them adjusting things up front. The joystick bipod is obviously adjustable from behind the gun but I'm wondering about alternate solutions. Thanks in advance.

Yes a joystick adjustable bipod is legal. Just remember there is a weight limit. So if your bipod is heavy you may have to trim weight from the barrel or stock.

Some FTR shooters will have a cut off arrow shaft to adjust the elevation of the rifle on a Phoenix bipod while shooting. I personally reach forward to turn the wheel to make course adjustments. I have a slightly angled butt stock that can be slid forward and back on a heavy sand filled rear bag to make fine adjustments for elevation.

As Dirty Steve mentioned above, almost every rifle setup modification in FTR begins with thinking about weight.

Before making a bunch of stuff, come to a match. Look, listen, ask questions. Most shooters will happily talk about their hot rod. Once you hold a Joypod in your hand and see how lite it is, you will see the mountain you need to climb building your own.
^^^^^^^ This.

Instead of spending time and materials building your own, watch and learn then buy one that you like. New, used doesn't matter. Spend your time shooting, developing your gun handling, and your load. Range time is crucial. Yes, you can make all the point of aim adjustments you want between shots. As long as you are mindful of your time limits.
I have a Phoenix and a JoyPod-X. I struggle making weight with the Phoenix, X-IT stock, heavy palma 31", Defiance action. JoyPod-X is maybe 18oz. When the box arrived on my porch, I thought it was empty.
I shoot the JoyPod-X and love it. Without a ski foot adjustable bipod, you will be behind the curve in the current F-TR environment. Welcome to the range and the F-Class rabbit hole.
I wish you well.
