What have i gotten myself into??????

I have a cooper in 22br and need any info you can give me on case forming, equipment i need, and generally what to look out
for, problems i could encounter)i`ve been reading up on this and have learned a little but i`m looking for experiences from seasoned reloaders and shooters of this caliber.

Thanx
Phil.

For Starters, look at the 22BR Cartridge Guide: http://www.6mmbr.com/22BR.html

We'll need to know the twist rate of your barrel to suggest bullets and powders.

A good set of dies is important. Redding makes a good set of 22BR dies.

Twist is 1-14

Bullets 40-55gr. squirrel gun,pd.etc.

I looked at the 22br forum it answered some ?`s and raised some.

My BIG concern right now is necking down the cartrige,it sounds simple but thats where i`m afraid of getting too lax and making a mistake.

I know i`ll have to turn the necks,to get rid of any doughnut i get,but will i also have to trim the neck for overall length??

Will i have to trim the case length every time i fire the brass???

After the first load and firing the case will be fire formed to the chamber, will i have to resize the brass after that or will i be ok checking length and reloading??

P.S. I`ve never reloaded metallic before so i`m asking alot of qusetions, loaded plenty of shotgun though.

Thanks
Phil.

Here's what I did to go from 6BR to 22BR, Lapua 6BR Norma case-
run the case into a Redding 22BR form-trim die, then depending on your chamber's neck diameter, turn the necks for .003 clearence. I turned mine to .0125" thick, so that after final neck sizing I get a .249" case neck for my .252" chamber neck, just a couple passes. The trim length depends on your chamber's neck length. Allow .005" to .010" for the neck length. My chamber is 1.573" and all the resized 22BR cases were at or under 1.555, so I trim to 1.550 for consistency.,This Lapua brass doesn't seem to stretch in the neck, never trimmed after first sizing) Then neck size and chamfer, check you neck dimensions, and you are ready to load. I use Redding's 6BR bushing die with a .246" bushing and a 22BR stem/carbide button. My loaded neck is .248" and fired neck is .2505-.251." When the bolt gets tight, I bump the shoulder .002" in a Redding 6BR body die. I anneal every 10 reloads. This batch of 35 22BR cases has 25 reload cycles and only lost one so far to a slight split in neck near mouth at 20 reloads.,You can also sort by weight but for squirrel hunting probably not neccessary)This was my first resizeing project, but have been reloading metallic for several years, but it seemed easy enough. Having been already setup for 6BR, I only purchased the form-trim die and the .246 bushing and 22BR stem and carbide button.

wziz summed it up pretty well. I had to use a 6BR small base die to get my cases to fit the tight chamber. You should always check the fit of your ammo before you get to the range. Be safe and remove the firing pin from the bolt.
