Newbie Question....Sights VS. Scopes NRA Mid Range

I am interested in NRA Mid Range Sling shooting.

Can someone tell me why I would choose sights over a scope or vice versa? I know that the scope magnifies everything - including mirage. Are there any good articles regarding sight setup (iris's/diopters/etc).

Please educate the open minded new guy!

Generally speaking, you must shoot irons sights to be eligable to win the aggregate. Most matches will have an any sight match for match1, then iron sights for match 2 and 3. Generally, first match of the day allows scopes. Rational is the targets are often very dark.

You can shoot irons in an any sight match but to be eligible to win you must shoot irons in an iron sight match.

Now, if you're just going out there to have a good time and don't care about winning the match overall, shoot a scope and have fun.

When you become 'intimate' with your sights - that is they are your friend instead of adversary, you will prefer them to a scope. If you check the scores of top shooters shooting both (irons on iron sight days, scopes on their's) the scores are not all that different. The X-count might be higher but good shooters can shoot either well. Ask a lot of questions and dive in.

I didn't realize that it was required for aggregate in the course of fire - I thought sights were just another classification. Sounds like bullseye pistol where the course of fire is .22/centerfire/.45. But in this case it is focused on the equipment not necessarily the caliber. That answers my question. I didn't know if it was a competitive advantage thing....and it is, but not what I was expecting.

I love shooting my service rifle and my tactical rifle both....I think a match rifle would be a lot of fun too, but may not be in the cards for a while (baby on the way).

Maybe I don't understand, but as stated above, the scores are about the same with iron or scope. However I have looked through the supposed iron sights and the sight picture appears to be on the level of a low power scope.

When it comes time to buy a front sight, get a Right Sight from Stallings Machine. Best sight on the market. You can share the front sight between rifles, even your smallbore gun.

Irons are far more fun to shoot and more reliable than optics.
